Gates of Vienna News Feed 5/14/2012

Gates of Vienna News Feed 5/14/2012Political turmoil continues in Greece as the country’s parties remain unable to form a government. If another election has to be held, the socialists are expected to do even better this time. This would give a new socialist government a mandate to resist the EU-imposed austerity program, which would drive Greece even closer to bankruptcy, an exit from the Eurozone, and a return to the drachma. The state electricity utility nearly had to impose a blackout last weekend when it came close to running out of cash, and the Greek tourism industry is in freefall as the prime vacation season gets underway.

In other news, a conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome highlighted the fact that the countries of North Africa and the Middle East remain unable to feed themselves, due to political turmoil, bad agricultural practices, and a dysfunctional distribution system.

Of course when you say bankrupt you really mean something far beyond bankruptcy since Greece is currently being paid to go further into debt and has no prospect of paying it back. I guess we could call it a default on the credit line which is temporarily papering over Greek insolvency. The Greek voters apparently think they can leverage an unending line of credit from their EU partners by threatening to activate their Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) option. For a country with a few grapes and olives and not much else, that's not going to be pretty. At the least, I would hope the Greeks have the good sense to expel the millions of Muslims in their midst as they did in 1923. That way, they might be able to feed themselves through this period of national doom.

The BEEB apologises for saying that Sikhism is "made up from other religions" including Islam. It was.
MMMM. Isn't Islam "made up" from previous religions including Judaeism and Christiantity and earlier "pagan" religions (as evidenced by the black stone in the Kaaba) ?
Isn't Christianity an extension of Judaeism?
Personally I think ALL modern religions are "made up". Some , but not Islam, give some rules for civilised life. Good rules mainly.
