Virginia Tech: The Gun-Free Zone Has Another Murder

Update: Actually, it was a stabbing. Unlike the British, Tech forgot to forbid knives.

Fom the AP:

Va. Tech student fatally stabbed, suspect caught

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — A female student was stabbed to death Wednesday night on Virginia Tech’s campus, triggering a crisis alert system that was revamped after a deadly mass shooting there in 2007.

Students were warned in an electronic alert Wednesday night to stay in place while police investigated the killing, and were told in a message at 8:37 p.m. that they could resume normal activity.

A male suspect was taken into custody around 7:10 p.m., according to a university news release. Campus police responding to an emergency call found the man and a knife they believe was used at the scene, a cafe in the Graduate Life Center.

Both the victim and the suspect are graduate students at Virginia Tech, and police believe they knew each other, the school said.

Further details weren’t immediately released, and university officials didn’t immediately reply to phone and e-mail messages left seeking comment.

We have no news to report on this situation beyond what the future Baron, a graduate student at VA Tech, just sent.

This is forwarded from a campus-wide, "VT Alerts" email to all students, staff and personnel. The time stamp is 7:44 p.m., EST:

VT Police have confirmed a murder in the Graduate Life Center. A suspect is in custody. Stay where you are and stay vigilant. Stay away from the GLC. -end-

More later as we determine more.

If our readers have further information, please leave it in the comments. The Baron hasn't been able to find anything.

"Suspect in custody after murder on Virginia Tech campus
January 21, 2009 - 8:52pm

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's police have a suspect in custody in connection with a homicide on campus Wednesday evening.
According to a message posted on the school's website around 7 p.m., the murder happened at the Graduate Life Center. Students were asked to stay away from the center, stay where they were, and stay vigilant.

An update around 8:30 said to still avoid the Graduate Life Center, but otherwise were okay to resume normal activity.

No other details have been released.

This is just a guess, but since the grad students are older, likely some of them are married and this may be a "domestic" -- i.e., husband/male partner going after his wife.

I'm just going by statistics...

VA Tech continues to be a smug, p.c. place. You would feel uncomfortable even mentioning the word "gun" in that environment.

Unfortunately, these academic and administrative types don't realize that forbidding something doesn't make it less likely.

Was it Robert Heinlien that said "a polite society is an armed society"?

That killer wouldn't have been so confident of getting his prey had he not been absolutely sure he was free to roam in a "gun-free zone".

They forgot *knives* ??

At short range - like in a school - knives are much more dangerous than guns.

If they want to ban lethal weapons, please get it right...

Nope, Heinlein said an armed society is a polite society.

Thank goodness he didn't shoot her, though, in a gun-free zone.
But some cultures actually prefer knives to guns. Just wondering.
If it's a white man, they usually let you know right away.

I think it's quite reasonable to set up certain zones, like schools, to be free of weapons.

20 years ago, carrying a knife with you for a night in town was absolutely unheard of. Noone did so. People simply didn't have the idea.

This 'cultural enrichment' we're experiencing didn't bring us any good on that account, either.

Henrik--100 years ago, a gentleman did not leave his home in London without a small revolver or derringer.
Times and crime have not changed for the better.

Oh, it gets more interesting today...

She was decapitated!

The girl who murdered her is from Ningbo, China.

In case you didn't know, Ningbo has a Muslim population and a mosque; the Ningbo Mosque:

Telephone number 574-87302495

Kind of makes you wonder, eh?
