The coalition government of Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard — who is beholden to the Greens — is implementing a new “carbon tax” on the 500 companies with the largest carbon emissions. Part of the money will be rebated to pensioners, disabled people, and other disadvantaged citizens to help them cope with the resulting inflation, which the government acknowledges will be an effect of the new policy.

In other news, the recent behavior of the Pakistani government has caused the Obama administration to withhold $800 million in military aid to Pakistan.
