The U.S. Senate failed to pass Majority Leader Harry Reid’s measure that would have raised the debt limit. Although they commanded a majority, Senate Democrats lacked the 60 votes necessary for a procedural vote to end a Republican filibuster. However, a compromise was reportedly later reached that will allow both houses to agree, and thus prevent a default before Tuesday’s deadline.
