Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/25/2010

Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/25/2010Now that they have promised a bailout, France and Germany are talking tough to Greece, insisting that it must extend its already stringent austerity measures and reform its fiscal system. The German foreign minister has gone so far as to suggest that no German money may be forthcoming if the Greeks fail to toe the line.

In other news, Iran has struck a deal with Robert Mugabe to exploit Zimbabwe’s untapped uranium for its nuclear program. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia — obviously nervous over the imminence of all those nukes just across the Persian Gulf — has indicated that it will begin its own nuclear program.

Saudi Arabia starting its own nuclear program? About a year ago there were reports that Saudi Arabia was talking to Russia about buying nuclear weapons. There were also reports that Egypt and other Muslim countries were talking about starting nuclear programs in response to the Iranian program. We should expect that eventually there will be multiple nuclear powers in the Middle East. This is a most ominous trend, a near future were one or more Muslim countries can lob a nuclear weapon onto New York or Los Angeles. I'm starting to wish for a return to the cold war.
