The “Troika” (a combination of the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund) have given Greece 15 days to come up with an additional €300 million in budget cuts, or risk losing the next tranche of €180 million in bailout funds. As of late today the Greek Prime minister told the Commission that he had struck a political deal to obtain the required cuts. Greek unions are calling for another general strike, this one for 48 hours, and protests have become increasingly anti-German, with slogans referring to the “Fourth Reich”.
In other news, a halal abattoir in western Sydney has been reported to the New South Wales food authority for possible violations of laws against cruelty to animals. The license of the slaughterhouse has been suspended during the investigation.
