A record number of Swedes emigrated from their homeland last year. The official statistics bureau emphasized, however, that the size of the exodus — 50,000 people — represented only 0.5% of the population. In contrast, the great migration of 1887 saw 1% of the Swedish population emigrate to America.
In other news, the Danube is finally thawing. The breakup of the ice has caused chaos in Belgrade, as huge chunks of moving ice do damage to boats and barges.
