The intense cold snap continues in Europe and North Africa. At least eighty deaths have been blamed on the weather in Algeria, where ice and snow have snarled the roads, and badly vented heaters have killed people indoors. Wolves are coming down from the Apennines in Italy to escape the cold and seek shelter; a pack was sighted near an elementary school, causing consternation among local residents.
In other news, after an Islamist coup in the Maldives, a mob of Muslim zealots attacked the national museum and smashed a number of “idolatrous” statues of the Buddha.
