Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/23/2010

Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/23/2010Sharjah is a tiny emirate right next door to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is in the midst of a record heat wave, with temperatures soaring to 45º C (113º F) during the day, and dropping to 33º C (91º F) at night. The heat is so intense that it has overwhelmed the capacity of the local power station to generate enough electricity for all the air conditioners — the generators use diesel fuel, and Sharjah has run out of diesel reserves. Many residents have taken to their air-conditioned cars to escape the unbearable heat.

In other news, an entrepreneur in Las Vegas has devised a new business model: he buys up the right to newspaper articles, and then sues online news aggregation sites and forums for copyright infringement when they post content that his company owns. He says he’s making a profit.
