Western media today showed video footage and photos of female protesters being kicked and beaten with steel bars by military police in Cairo. One disturbing sequence shows police ripping a woman’s shirt off, and then dragging her and beating her while another man stomps on her exposed chest.
In other news, European commissioner for economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn says that Italian prime minister Monti’s austerity package is “convincing”, but Italy must do much more than that to solve its budgetary problems.
