As part of an attempt to impose €26 billion in spending cuts on the Italian government, Prime Minister Mario Monti announced plans to lay off 24,000 state employees. 8,000 of those layoffs will be accomplished through early retirement.
In other news, a Christian pastor in Pakistan was kidnapped a week ago by eight men dressed as policemen, and has not been seen since.
