Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/16/2012A sixth passenger has been found dead in the Italian cruise ship that ran aground and partially sank off the island of Giglio. More than twenty people are still missing. The company that owns the ship now says that the captain had veered off course, perhaps to show the island to passengers on the ship. He remains in police custody.

In financial news, the Fitch ratings agency has downgraded the debt of both Russia and South Africa. Meanwhile, an estimated $39 trillion of pension obligations hangs over the European Union. It’s not clear what proportion of those pensions remains unfunded.

In other news, the Associated Press has become the first Western news bureau to open an office in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

One story that has appeared on the news is that the skipper went too close to the rocks because he saw someone he knew on the shore & wanted to wave to them.
