Right. That’s what you’re supposed to feel when you hear about it. If this sort of thing makes you feel nervous and uneasy, you try to squelch it, because you know such thoughts are intolerant. They may reveal a bit of inherent racism that you haven’t yet purged yourself of.
If it’s any consolation, in this case your instincts were correct: this is not a well-meaning interfaith outreach by Muslim-Americans wanting only to co-exist. It’s the tip of a very sharp stiletto of propaganda which, when fully inserted, is designed to do serious damage to the Christian faith.
The event in question is coming up next weekend in Binghamton, New York, and involves some characters who will be familiar to longtime Gates of Vienna readers. Many thanks to C5’s Simian Roadhouse for pointing me to the
flyer (pdf) for the event, and the press release for the United Muslim-Christian Forum:
Upcoming Event! 2nd Annual Muslim-Christian Celebration of Jesus, Son of Mary
In this upcoming joyful holiday season, where love and reverence for Jesus, born of the chaste Mary, is widely celebrated by Christians the world over, the United Muslim-Christian Forum (UMCF) is embarking on its 2nd annual event as a time for Muslims to acquaint those of their Christian brethren and the world, who are not aware of the fact that Muslims, too, share tremendous love for the blessed Jesus. UMCF invites Muslims, Christians, clergy and brothers and sisters in faith to join us on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Days Inn Binghamton, New York for this spectacular unity occasion.
In December 2009, the 1st annual celebration of Jesus Son of Mary brought together Muslims, Christians and members of other faith groups in Binghamton, New York, under the banner of the United Muslim Christian Forum to shed light on the esteemed role of Jesus, son of Mary. Muslims expressed the position of the Holy Quran- the only book other than the Bible that indeed verifies the existence of Jesus, defends his blessed mother from false allegations of slander and even contains a chapter entitled, “Maryam”, devoted to his mother Mary and his miraculous birth. Members of the public, press and media attended the 1st annual event and witnessed the devotees of these two great religions as they celebrated, in unity, their mutual love for the blessed Jesus. The United Muslim Christian Forum, again invites the world on Saturday, January 8th to witness this interfaith event.
By now some of you will be wondering, “Could this be…?” Yes, you’re right, it is indeed the Sheikh himself who is behind all this warm-hearted ecumenical brotherhood:
UMCF was founded by El Sheikh Syed Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani and stands on the unshakeable principle ‘Mankind is the Family of God’, belief in the One Almighty Creator, reverence for the Ten Commandments and fulfillment of the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”. [emphasis added]
For readers who have never encountered Sheikh Gilani before: he is the founder not only of UMCF, but also Muslims of America (MOA), the front group for the terrorist group Jamaat ul-Fuqra.
Sheikh Gilani is a Sufi based in Lahore, Pakistan. He is no longer welcome in the United States, so he conducts his business here remotely, via local surrogates. The national headquarters of MOA is not far from Binghamton, NY; hence the intensive community outreach by the sheikh’s local organs.
For more information on the Muslims of America, see the “Jamaat ul-Fuqra” links on our sidebar. The most comprehensive information may be found in The Charlotte County Files.
Back to the UMCF and the “Celebration of Jesus, Son of Mary”. What are Sheikh Gilani and his crew in Binghamton up to with all this Jesus talk?
One clue may be found on the “About UMCF” page:
The United Muslim Christian Forum was established by His Eminence, El Sheikh Syed Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani, Vice Chancellor of the International Qur’anic Open University to recognize similarities between Muslims and Christians, diminish differences and seek a new solid foundation of joint respect based on the unchallenged commandments of God and love for the blessed Messengers of God (peace upon them all).
And there are two more hints in the flyer for next Saturday’s event:
1. | A passage from the Koran: “Say: He Allah is One.”
2. | A passage from the Bible: “Hear Ye! Your Lord God is One!” |
Leaving aside the fact that the purported biblical quote may not actually be from the Bible (I couldn’t find it, but I’m not a Bible expert), these two verses are designed to demonstrate to Christians that God/Allah is a single undivided entity — that is, that there is no Trinity.
This is very important in Islamic theology. Muslims recognize Jesus (Nabu Isa) as a prophet, but he is not divine, and is not the son of God. Divinity is reserved for Allah, and Allah alone. As the UMCF About page mentions, Jesus is one of the “blessed Messengers of God”, which group also includes Noah, Moses, and (of course) Mohammed.
Here are some of the relevant verses in the Koran concerning Jesus (translation by Maulana Muhammad Ali). I’ve bolded certain phrases that are of interest for this discussion:
4:157 | And for their saying: We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah, and they killed him not, nor did they cause his death on the cross, but he was made to appear to them as such. And certainly those who differ therein are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge about it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for certain:
4:171 | O People of the Book, exceed not the limits in your religion nor speak anything about Allah, but the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is only a messenger of Allah and His word which He communicated to Mary and a mercy from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And say not, Three. Desist, it is better for you. Allah is only one God. Far be it from His glory to have a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And sufficient is Allah as having charge of affairs.
4:172 | The Messiah disdains not to be a servant of Allah, nor do the angels who are near to Him. And whoever disdains His service and is proud, He will gather them all together to Himself.
4:173 | Then as for those who believe and do good, He will pay them fully their rewards and give them more out of His grace. And as for those who disdain and are proud, He will chastise them with a painful chastisement, and they will find for themselves besides Allah no friend nor helper.
19:35 | It beseems not Allah that He should take to Himself a son. Glory be to Him! when He decrees a matter He only says to it, Be, and it is.
19:36 | And surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so serve Him. This is the right path.
19:37 | But parties from among them differed; so woe to those who disbelieve, because of their presence on a grievous day!
19:38 | How clearly will they hear and see on the day when they come to Us; but the wrongdoers are today in manifest error.
19:39 | And warn them of the day of Regret, when the matter is decided. And they are (now) in negligence and they believe not. |
- The Christ is always named as “Jesus, son of Mary” to make sure that He is not identified as the son of God.
- The Muslims emphatically believe that Christ was not crucified and did not die on Good Friday. Hence “they killed him not.”
- There was no Holy Spirit involved in Mary’s conception of Jesus, or in anything else.
- There was no Son of God: “It beseems not Allah that He should take to Himself a son.”
- Hence there is no Trinity: “And say not, Three.”
- Anyone who believes such doctrine is guilty of blasphemy. Allah’s reaction? “He will chastise them with a painful chastisement” and “the wrongdoers are today in manifest error.” For those who know their Koran, this means that believers in the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus will burn in hell forever.
Huh. Some interfaith outreach.
Jesus does play an important role in Islam, however. According to the Traditions of the Prophet, the Muslim Jesus was not crucified — someone else was crucified in his stead, and was mistaken for him. He is still alive, and will appear at the End of Days, when his job will be to slaughter all the remaining unbelievers who have never submitted to Allah.
This is what the ecumenical efforts of the United Muslim-Christian Forum are about. They are sliding their version of Jesus in under the Christian radar. Their smiley-face words will be enough to anesthetize most Christians, and they know very well that almost no non-Muslims will bother to do the research and learn what “Jesus, son of Mary” really means in Islam.
If you’re a Christian, it’s your job is to fill in the gaps. At the very least, buy a copy of the Koran, plus an account of the Traditions intended for a Muslim audience and a treatise on Islamic law. Study them carefully. Discuss them at church-related events.
Steel yourself against the inevitable accusations of “intolerance”, “bigotry”, and “racism”.
Know your Enemy.

The Biblical quote is a bit rough, but I think it's the Sh'ma Yisroel:
Deuteronomy 6:4 et seq:
4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
This is a GREAT piece, Baron. It really needs to be said. Muslims go on about 'believing in Jesus', but they DON'T.
I once saw advertised a talk by a liberal protestant theologian on a topic something like, 'The abolition of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity is necessary for world peace.' Why? When its acceptance, or at the very least, learning to live with the fact that some folks believe it and some folks don't but not having wars about it or getting 'offended' by other people's beliefs, would do the same thing? I wonder if said liberal protestant theologian has purchased his prayer mat yet.
I do note that the Deuteronomy verse as quoted leaves out the reference to "Israel".
"If this sort of thing makes you feel nervous and uneasy, you try to squelch it, because you know such thoughts are intolerant. They may reveal a bit of inherent racism that you haven’t yet purged yourself of."
Islam-Christian "dialogue," makes me feel, well, nothing, short of nauseous, tinged with contempt for any so-called Christian group that could imagine it had common ground with Islam. This is farcical in the extreme, and only goes to show how EMPTY of CHRISTIANITY many in the church are. I guess they simply deny Jesus' words: I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No other way to God exists; all other so-called religions are man made. The mass of humanity are lost without Jesus Christ. There can be no dialogue in community of belief between those who say Jesus is the only way and others who say whatever you believe is just peachy, including those idiots whose evil character is revealed in hallucinations about 72 virgins awaiting them if they MURDER for Allah.
I rather like Deut 6:14-15
"Do not follow other gods, gods of the peoples around you, for Yahweh your God among you is a jealous God; the wrath of Yahweh your God would blaze out against you, and he would wipe you off the face of the earth."
(Jerusalem Study Bible)
Anyone who wants a clear picture of what a "Muslim-Christian Interfaith Celebration" looks like need search no farther than Alexandria, Egypt for what to expect.
Jesus, Son of God.
Mary, Mother of God.
Muslims will never believe that.
Well of course the Mohammadans don't accept the Trinity, any more than we should accept Mo as a prophet. This is really a shame, because it seems like there should be some workable common ground for dialogue and getting along. I know, that's nearly an impossible "If" these days, and especially with terrorists and terrorist fronts running all these show. There is meaningful Christian/Jewish dialogue, and -pardon my saying so- Judaism has less regard for Jesus than the Mohammadans, and Christians of course do not accept the Talmud any more than the Koran. Just saying that religious differences need not be an insurmountable stumbling block to a meaningful working relationship -- just in this case, they only thing they really want to say is "3...2...1.."
Muslim-Christian dialogue consists of this:
Muslim: Islam is a great religion.
Christian: Islam is a great religion.
end of dialogue.
If you are a Christian, and you are honest with yourself, you must say out loud that
1. Islam is profane.
2. Mohammed is a false prophet.
And those two sentences should be all you have for any Muslim.
The Jesus of Islam is clearly not the Jesus of Christianity -- which is no surprise, given that the Allah of Islam is not the God of Christianity.
I have come across the theory that the Antichrist spoken of in Christianity and the Mahdi spoken of in Islam are one and the same. I believe that Islam also teaches that Jesus will stand behind that figure and do his bidding.
This series of podcasts gives an excellent contrast between the Muslim and Christian beliefs regarding Jesus:
Fr. Daniel Byantoro
I just had an online debate with a Muslim where he eventually declared that Jesus was "the son of a whore". He claimed that the Islamic Jesus openly declares his mother a whore.
He also openly declared that the rape, murder and slavery committed by Muslims is sanctioned by God.
What a sick and evil "religion".
