I have collected all eighteen translations of Fitna (plus the original English) and combined them in a simple HTML file. This file is designed to be quick to load, easy to copy, and quite printable.

The texts in French and Polish have better time stamps than the others because they were constructed by expert subtitlers (thanks, François and Peter) who built files designed for use by subtitling software. These two languages will be of more use for designing additional subtitled versions. I have an .ssa file from the French version for anyone who needs it; email unspiek@chromatism.net if you want a copy.

If any more languages arrive in my inbox — there are three or four still unaccounted for — I will post them here and also add them to the new master file.

Many thanks to everyone who assisted with the Rosetta Stone project. I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to see an effort like this come together according to plan, work like it’s supposed to, and generate a result that is useful to people.

We’re all part-time volunteers, but our combined labor produces something that couldn’t otherwise have been obtained in such a short time without paying a lot of money.

A Rosetta Stone for “Fitna”: Part Five

As of this post, all the translations of Fitna that I have on hand are now available online at Gates of Vienna. Earlier installments are here, here, here, and here. Today I have added Tagalog, Russian, and Polish, bringing the total to eighteen languages plus English.

In case you don’t know what Tagalog is, it’s the language in the Philippines that has the largest number of speakers. As of the year 2000 there were an estimated 22 million native Tagalog speakers in the islands. Since the Philippines suffers from a permanent and deadly Muslim insurgency in Mindanao and some of the smaller islands, making the film Fitna available with subtitles in Tagalog is obviously a worthwhile task.

Volunteers for the project are welcome.

The Ordeal of Mikko Ellilä

Last Friday the Finnish TV network YLE published the following brief news item:

Blogger Fined for Inciting Racial Hatred

A blogger in Finland has been fined for writing offensive material about Africans.

A court sentenced the 30-year old Espoo resident to a fine for inciting racial hatred. It found that the man’s writings on the Internet constituted illegal propaganda.

The judgment ruled that the man slandered Africans by comparing them to animals. In his defense, the man said that laws governing freedom of speech protected his right to express his opinion.

Inciting racial hatred — hets mot folkgrupp in the Swedish version — is the catchall offense used in Finland to suppress politically incorrect speech.

The blogger thought he was protected by the right of free speech, but he was mistaken. With the possible exception of Denmark, freedom of speech does not exist in any European country. The right to speak freely is subordinate to the right to practice one’s religion freely, and to be free of racial discrimination. Both of these “rights” are conveniently used to suppress anyone who questions Orthodox Multiculturalism.

The story doesn’t mention the name of the blogger, but he is in fact Mikko Ellilä.

I wrote extensively starting in May of last year about the efforts of the Finnish authorities to silence Mikko Ellilä. Mr. Ellilä made the unpardonable mistake of holding opinions about immigration and racial issues which the state found unacceptable.

The legal process against him started with a summons to talk to the police. After that it looked like nothing much might happen, and there were some among our commenters who claimed we were making a lot of fuss about nothing, and that Mr. Ellilä was bound to be released.

But it didn’t work out that way. The matter was referred to the State Prosecutor, who brought the case to trial, and Mr Ellilä was convicted. It’s the second such case in Finland, and will draw the iron curtain of censorship down even tighter over Finnish anti-immigration blogs and websites.

The Finnish court’s decision to find Finnish blogger Mikko Ellilä is a severe blow to fundamental rights governing free speech.

Another aspect to the case, is whether he should have been forced by a court to have to explain his views at all. The Finnish State Prosecutor’s line of questioning: “what was your intent”, should send a chill up everyone’s spine, no matter what the issue is about. This scaling back of liberal freedoms — if it isn’t overturned by a higher court — comes at a crucial time when civil liberties are under attack by those who want to limit what one can say about Islam.

Turkkilaista tuumintaa has major portions of the trial transcript translated into English. KGS includes a caveat that Matias Turkkila made his partial transcript from notes rather than a tape recording, so word-for-word accuracy is not to be expected.

Here’s a random excerpt:

[Defense attorney Kari] Silvennoinen: One of the offences mentioned in the preliminary investigation was that you had compared ethnic groups to animals. Is this the case?

Ellilä: No. I haven’t compared any ethnic groups to animals. I merely stated that man — as in mankind — is an animal, homo sapiens, which is of course a fact known to everyone.

Silvennoinen: How about the word “parasite”, which you use at one point?

Ellilä: In Finland, the word “parasite” [“loinen”] was originally a socio-economic term used in 19th century agrarian society, where terms such as “peasant”, “tenant farmer”, “parasite” etc. were used, this last group being people who lived at the expense of others. It was only later that this word came to be used of lice and other insects, and it’s still used colloquially in the socio-economic sense in political discourse, in newspaper columns and such. It’s not the kind of word that politicians would use, but then, I am not a politician, but a private citizen.

Silvennoinen: Did you have any intentions of inciting or offending?

Ellilä: None whatsoever. [emphasis added]

Notice that Mikko Ellilä’s defense comes down to what he intended. As it happens, such a defense proved inadequate — evidently the court determined that Mr. Ellilä’s intentions were not benign, and ruled accordingly.

But let’s suppose for the sake of argument that Mikko Ellilä’s inner thoughts and intentions are in fact vile. Let’s pretend that he really thinks that Africans are no better than animals, that Jews are sub-humans, and the Suomi-speakers of Finland are the most evolved race on the planet.

So what?

I would find such opinions repugnant. I would decline to read his writings, and I would give his theories no credence.

But that’s not the issue.

The issue is this: Freedom of speech means the absolute right to say truly repugnant things.

Otherwise it has no meaning. If we are only free to say “The Emperor’s clothes are gorgeous and delightful,” then we have no free speech whatsoever.

The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.

New Version of “Fitna” to be Released

Update:

LiveLeak has restored Fitna to its original location (which means my embedded version from last week should be working again).

It’s also the original version of the movie (with Turban Bomb), so the copyright question is still an issue.

Author Cuts Anti-Koran Film to Avoid Legal Actions

Scared by the legal consequences of his anti-Islam film, Dutch extreme-right MP and author of the controversial film ‘Fitna’, Geert Wilders, decided to cut some scenes of his work to defend himself from eventual legal actions already threatened by Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, author of the caricatures of Mohammed which inflamed part of the Islamic world and appear now in the film too.

Wilders cut the scene with the caricature of the Islamic prophet with a bomb hidden under his turban and replaced it with a similar drawing, after Westergaard threatened to take him to court for violation of author’s rights.

Fitna’s director will also replace the photography of Moroccan-Dutch rapper, Salah Edin, with an image of Mahomet Bouyeri, the killer of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, in order to avoid being charged by the singer, who has appeared as associated with the murder of Van Gogh. (ANSAmed).

The big question is: Where will the new version of the movie be released? What venue will accept it?

It seems unlikely that LiveLeak will put itself at risk a second time. So what hosting service will risk a fatwa and take on the dreaded and provocative hate-movie?

Jamaat ul-Fuqra Celebrates the Prophet’s Birthday in Binghamton

The public celebration of the birth of Mohammed is known as Mawlid, and was celebrated this year on March 20th or March 25th, under the Sunni or Shi’a traditions respectively.

But the Muslims of America, the front group for Jamaat ul-Fuqra, are celebrating the event on Saturday in downtown Binghamton, New York. Binghamton is the nearest large town to Deposit, which — as regular readers already know — is the home of Islamberg, the national headquarters of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, the followers of the Sheikh Gilani.

Maybe the difference in date is due to the fact that the sheikh and his disciples are Sufis, and not Sunnis or Shi’ites. According to The Press & Sun-Bulletin:

Downtown event to mark prophet’s birthday

The Muslims of the Americas group intends to celebrate the prophet Muhammad’s birthday in downtown Binghamton.

The community traditionally observed Milad-un-Nabi (celebration of the Holy Prophet) with a parade, singing and other activities at its privately owned property in Hancock, where 35 to 40 Muslim families live.

One of the ways you can tell this celebration is from a Pakistan-based group is that they call it Milad an-Nābi (Urdu) rather than Mawlid an-Nābi (Arabic). If the organization were an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, it would almost certainly refer to the occasion as Mawlid.

This year, though, the group wants to expand the celebration to include a parade and other activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in downtown Binghamton.

“We’re trying to do an interfaith thing, we’re reaching out to the community to do a program based on unity,” said Maryam A. Rahim, event coordinator. “We haven’t been very well known … We want everyone to come out and celebrate, maybe ask questions.”

The first-ever celebration of Muhammad’s birthday in Binghamton will include a parade starting at 11 a.m. on Court Street from Chenango to Front streets and then back to Chenango Street. One lane of downtown’s main street will be closed during the parade, said city spokesman Andrew Block, who also said the group secured the appropriate permits to hold the celebration.

After the parade, activities are scheduled in front of the old Broome County Court-house. The list of guest speakers includes the Rev. Douglas Taylor of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton and Diane O’Heron, a professor at Broome Community College.

Rahim said within the Muslim community, some adherents disagree with a formal celebration of Muhammad’s birthday, claiming it is excess and not in keeping with the prophet’s modest lifestyle.

Others consider the observance of Milad-un-Nabi to be just as important as Eid-ul-Fitr, which is the celebration after the fasting month of Ramadan, and Eid-ul-Adha, or the pilgrimage to Mecca, she said.

Everyone should pay attention to the sanitized history of MOA given in the next paragraph, which must have been pulled from the group’s press release or PR website and published in the newspaper without any checking or further research:

Muslims of the Americas was formed in the 1980s when several families migrated from ghetto properties in New York City to Hancock to make a new start on their own property in a clean, rural environment, Rahim said. The community includes a mosque and a private school.

There’s a little bit more to MOA than that, including a history of gun-running, money laundering, welfare fraud, firebombings, and murder.

Boycott the United Nations!

The United Nation’sSecretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned Wilder’s movie Fitna as “offensively anti-Islamic,” and said that “There is no justification for hate speech or incitement to violence.” Does that mean that the UN is now going to ban the Koran, which does both? As Robert Spencer commented, “What exactly is ‘hate speech’ about quoting Qur’an verses and then showing Muslim preachers using those verses to exhort people to commit acts of violence, as well as violent acts committed by Muslims inspired by those verses and others?”

Earlier in March, the U.N. Human Rights Council, which is dominated by Muslim countries, passed a resolution saying it is deeply concerned about the defamation of religions and urging governments to prohibit it. The only religion specified is Islam. The document was put forward by the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the largest voting bloc at the UN, sponsored by Saudi money.

I have been saying for a long time that trying to export “democracy” to Islamic countries is pointless. Islam can be compatible with “democracy” in the limited sense of voting rights and majority rule, but this has never automatically implied individual liberty. It’s a sick joke that American soldiers are bleeding literally and American taxpayers financially to export “democracy” to Iraq while Muslims are exporting sharia to us. Freedom is free speech, that’s the simplest, and maybe the truest, definition of it. Muslims are trying to use the UN to limit free speech across the world, which basically means putting the entire world under Islamic rule.

My view of the United Nations is quite clear: It is at best irrelevant. At best.

Increasingly, it is turning into an outright enemy, an enemy funded by us but used to attack us. I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m goddam tired of sponsoring enemies, at home and abroad. I’m all for boycotting the UN and making it truly irrelevant by bleeding it dry for funds and ultimately withdrawing from it.

Even if we are in a weak phase, which we are, we are still a civilization of vastly superior resources. Muslims have lots of oil and lots of babies and lots of aggression, but that’s all they have. Otherwise, they’re a spectacular failure. We need them for very little. They need us for virtually everything. Their greatest flaw is their arrogance. Muslims are arrogant losers.

We should exploit that. We should separate ourselves from the Islamic world as much as possible. They will suffer far more from this than we will. We can start by boycotting the UN, which is now little more than a tool for global sharia, and the Arab Muslims of the West Bank and Gaza, who reinvented themselves as “Palestinians” and started whining at the UN after the Israelis kicked their collective behinds in 1967.

I notice former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad calls upon Muslims worldwide to boycott Dutch products. I’m all for boycotts of and by Muslims. The more, the merrier. In case somebody forgot, Mr. Mahathir held the notorious speech at the OIC conference in 2003, where he said that the Jews rule the world by proxy and that Muslims must unite to achieve a final victory over them. Not everybody remembers that he also boasted about the age when”Europeans had to kneel at the feet of Muslim scholars in order to access their own scholastic heritage.”

Somebody should remind him that the so-called “golden age” of Islam was a result of a still-majority or near-majority non-Muslim population. As soon as that majority declined, due to harassment and discrimination, the Islamic world never recovered. Malaysia is sometimes portrayed as an economically successful Muslim nation, but that is because it only recently became majority Muslim and still has a large Chinese, Indian and other non-Muslim minority. Since Islam is becoming more aggressive and Muslims increase discrimination of non-Muslims, infidels will leave, and Malaysia will gradually be reduced to just another failed sharia state.

We should all be happy if Muslims boycott us. When they feel so unwelcome that they stop coming to our countries, we will be making progress.

Recommendations for the West

The best way to deal with the Islamic world is to have as little to do with it as possible. We should ban Muslim immigration. This could be done in creative and indirect ways, such as banning immigration from nations with citizens known to be engaged in terrorist activities. We should remove all Muslim non-citizens currently in the West. We should also change our laws to ensure that Muslim citizens who advocate sharia, preach Jihad, the inequality of “infidels” and of women should have their citizenship revoked and be deported back to their country of origin.

We need to create an environment where the practice of Islam is made difficult. Muslim citizens should be forced to either accept our secular ways or leave if they desire sharia. Much of this can be done in a non-discriminatory way, by simply refusing to allow special pleading to Muslims. Do not allow the Islamic public call to prayer as it is offensive to other faiths. All children, boys and girls should take part in all sporting and social activities of the school and the community. The veil should be banned in all public institutions, thus also contributing to breaking the traditional subjugation of women. Companies and public buildings should not be forced to build prayer rooms for Muslims. Enact laws to eliminate the abuse of family reunification laws. Do not permit major investments by Muslims in Western media or universities.

Right now, Muslims can enjoy the best of both worlds: Following medieval religious laws while enjoying the fruits of 21st century civilization. We need to drive home the utter failure of the Islamic model by making sure that Muslims should no longer able to count on permanent Western or infidel aid in their overpopulated, self-primitivized states, whose very unviability they are prevented from recognizing by this constant infusion of aid.

I’m advocating isolating the Islamic world, not the West. Even if we cannot allow all non-Muslims to freely settle in our lands, this does not mean that they have to be our enemies. Jihad is being waged against the entire non-Muslim world, not just the West. We should stop trying to “win the hearts and minds” of Muslims and start reaching out to non-Muslims.

For Europe, the most important thing to do right now is to dismantle the European Union in its present form, and regain national control over our borders and our legislation. The EU is so deeply flawed as an organization, and so heavily infiltrated by Eurabian and pro-Islamic thinking that it simply cannot be reformed. And let’s end the stupid support for the Palestinians that the Eurabians have encouraged, and start supporting our cultural cousin, Israel.

Why the Future May Not Belong to Islam

Seaborne believes that many people are underestimating the strength of Islam. Perhaps, but some observers, including Mark Steyn and Mr. Seaborne himself, may be overestimating it. They overlook the fact that Islam has many weaknesses, too. Don’t underestimate your enemy. Muslims should be credited for making clever use of our weaknesses, but this “we’re all doomed and have already lost” theme is overblown.

We should implement a policy of containment of the Islamic world. I’m not saying that containment is all that we will ever need to do, but it is the very minimum that is acceptable. Perhaps the spread of nuclear weapons technology, the darkest side of globalization, will trigger a large-scale war with the Islamic world at some point. The only way to avoid this is to take steps, including military ones, to deprive Muslims of such technology.

We should restrain their ability to hurt us physically. We can’t prevent it completely, but we should limit it as much as possible. Muslims try to wear us down through terrorism. They should be worn down through mockery and criticism. We should also make clear that for every Islamic terror attack we will increase these efforts, which Muslims fear more than our weapons. It’s the new balance of terror.

Dr Koenraad Elst, one of Belgium’s best orientalists, thinks “Islam is in decline, despite its impressive demographic and military surge” — which according to Dr Elst is merely a “last upheaval.” He acknowledges, however, that this decline can take some time (at least in terms of the individual human life span) and that it is possible that Islam will succeed in becoming the majority religion in Europe before collapsing.

Dalrymple is probably correct when he says that Islam is an “all or nothing” religion which cannot be secularized. The future may not belong to Islam, as Mark Steyn suggests. It is conceivable that Islam in some generations will cease to be a global force of any significance, but in the meantime it will be a constant source of danger to its neighbors, from Europe through India to Southeast Asia. The good news is that Islam may not be able to achieve the world dominance it desires. The bad news is that it may be able to achieve a world war. We can only cage it as much as possible and try to prevent this from happening.

Farewell to the United Nations?

Historian David Littman is a representative to the United Nations (Geneva) of the Association for World Education. He has spent years tracking the rise of Islamic influence at the UN. According to him, “In recent years, representatives of some Muslim states have demanded, and often received, special treatment at the United Nations.” “As a result, non-diplomatic terms such as ‘blasphemy’ and ‘defamation of Islam’ have seeped into the United Nations system, leading to a situation in which non-Muslim governments accept certain rules of conduct in conformity with Islamic law (the Shari’a) and acquiesce to a self-imposed silence regarding topics touching on Islam.”

I do not have all the answers to how such a post-UN world will be like. The most important principle at this point is to isolate and contain the Islamic world. We simply cannot allow our enemies to have direct influence over our policies, which they partly do have through the UN. Is it unrealistic to talk about the collapse of the EU and the UN? I don’t know. The UN was created in the aftermath of WW2. It survived the Cold War, but now we are rapidly entering into a new world war. My bet is that we will see huge changes in world affairs in the near future, at least as large as those which laid the foundations for the UN to begin with. Whatever usefulness the UN may have had was lost decades ago. It is today of little use to us, but of significant use to our enemies. The time has come to say farewell to the United Nations.

Iran Reads the Riot Act to the Dutch

Actually, it was the Indonesians who did the rioting — the mullahs evidently had to delegate some of the work.

But Iran is unhappy about Fitna, and has summoned the Dutch ambassador to express the regime’s displeasure.

Is it a coincidence that a Farsi version of the movie appeared at about the same time?

Iran summons Dutch envoy over Fitna

Tehran — Iran has summoned the Dutch ambassador to protest about Fitna, the anti-Qur’an film produced by far-right MP Geert Wilders. Tehran recently asked European government to ban the film. So far Pakistan had been the only country to summon a Dutch envoy over the film.

The controversy has prompted Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen to publish an article in the Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, calling on people “to keep their head cool and relations warm”. He also underlined the need for dialogue to explain that freedom of speech and religion are human rights enshrined in the Dutch constitution.

Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has since joined worldwide condemnation of the film. On the Indonesian island of Java hundreds of Islamic students took to the streets of the city of Magelang to protest against the film. Indonesia’s Minister for Social Affairs Bachtiar Chamsyah had previously called for demonstrations.

Fjordman Reviews “Fitna”

I asked Fjordman to write a review of Fitna for Gates of Vienna, and he kindly sent us the brief essay below.

I liked it. It is impressive how much they managed to squeeze into just 15 minutes. I notice several of the comments at Jihad Watch say Geert Wilders could have made it worse. Yes, he could. He left out quite a few things, but what he kept was authentic and bad enough.

We should remember that the people reading websites such as Jihad Watch or Atlas Shrugs or Gates of Vienna are perfectly aware of how bad Islam is. This movie was not made for them. It was made for all those tens of millions or hundreds of millions of people out there who don’t trust the official propaganda about Islam, but still don’t fully understand how bad it is. Being too harsh (even if what is described is true) could put some of them off.

I believe this movie struck a good balance between showing Islam for what it is and still making it possible for the average person to digest the message. It is highly effective.

But I agree with Hugh Fitzgerald: We want a sequel! What about “Pirates of Muhammad: At Islam’s End,” starring Johnny Depp? Yes, I know, it would be too cute, but at least people would see it. As long as Keira Knightley plays Aisha, I’m happy.

I especially liked the agitated gentleman waving a sword, screaming for Jihad. I thought Jihad was about inner, peaceful struggle against yourself, a bit like yoga? He didn’t seem to enjoy any inner peace, though.

And if Jihad is about better education, as I have heard from my local newspaper, why didn’t he wave a pencil?

The urgency of this and related projects is highlighted by the all but universal official condemnation of the movie that has emerged since Thursday. Virtually the entire MSM and all political leaders severely disapprove of Geert Wilders. The most recent example to arrive in our inbox (thanks insubria) is from the EuroMed parliament. According to ANSAmed:

The Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA), which unites 240 representatives of the Parliaments on the two coasts, condemned today “the slanderous campaign against Islam” as “the Dutch film whose contents are considered an offense to the Muslim world” shows.

“The Assembly condemns the spread confusion between terrorism and Islam and expresses its regret for the offenses and the unjustified slanderous campaign against the Muslims, with reference to the film produced in the Netherlands,” reads the EMPA declaration approved in Athens today by the Assembly’s plenary session.

The representatives of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliaments, led by European Parliament President Has Gert Poettering, appealed to the media, that have “the responsibility to avoid the spreading of offensive contents” and must not broadcast in an indiscriminate way “on the basis of the principle of freedom of expression which could encourage the racist and discriminatory trends existing in society”.

We must be doing something right to invite this kind of reaction. Let’s keep doing it.

Hazelgrove School Submits

Hazlegrove Prep School is an attractive boarding school in Sparkford, Somerset.

The photos at right were taken last December when Year 7 from Hazelgrove visited the nearby Yeovil Mosque. Besides the photos, the only information about the excursion available on the school’s website is an event page giving the dates.

Look at those traditional English public school pupils down on their knees on the carpet, all decked out in their school uniforms, the girls properly veiled. Then over they go! Foreheads on the floor, just like good Muslims.

A thought experiment: imagine these same students on a field trip to a synagogue, the boys wearing yarmulkes and participating in a Jewish worship service.

Another one: they all troop down to the local Catholic church, genuflect before the altar, and cross themselves.

Can’t picture it?

Me neither.

Those photos give me the creeps. It’s not just the fact that this is Islam we’re looking at. Nor do I believe that through this experience these kids are likely to be drawn to Islam and be converted into followers of the Prophet.

What bothers me is that this looks like a dress rehearsal for Islamic Britain, a dry run for the day when Islam is the official state religion. Another generation of kids just like these will grow up to be not particularly observant Muslims, making sure that they turn up at the mosque and bang their heads on the carpet often enough to be respectable.

They’ll be, in a word, “moderate” Muslims, just like the vast majority of Muslims in the world. They won’t particularly believe anything in the Koran, any more than they believe what’s in the Bible today, but they’ll never publicly question the One True Faith.

They’ll do what’s expected of them, and be ruled over by imams or mullahs who are much more zealous in their faith, the blokes who will organize their little island corner of the Ummah in the proper sharia fashion.

God help Britain.

A Rosetta Stone for “Fitna”: Part Two

I announced our “Rosetta Stone” project for Fitna last night, and since then the translations have been rolling in. I have fourteen languages in hand, with (I hope) several more to come.

A commenter has even left a translation into Romanian on last night’s post, and I have extracted it and will eventually post it along with the others.

The movie continues to spread virally, and I have acquired more links to download sites. Later today I will compile a new list and post it. The most recent editions are two Rapid Share versions with subtitles in Russian, here and here.

The French translation was acquired from the subtitled version of the video at Bivouac ID, with the help of François. Here’s what François said in an email:

Here is attached a .ssa file (substation alpha) for FITNA

It contains the French translation and all the necessary timecodes, colour and position parameters for the Fitna movie.

It should be easily read , converted & adapted by any advanced captioning (subtitling) software.

In case you want to have a look, the file can also be opened by any simple text editor.

The translators would only have to replace the French text by their own translation

We know it would have been better if the file was in plain English, but we believe this little problem will be easily overcome.

You should credit the Bivouac ID site for this (http://www.bivouac-id.com/ ). They were kind enough to distribute it freely in order to help all subtitlers worldwide.

I’ve looked at the .ssa file, and it should be quite easy to substitute another language at each line and then run it through subtitling software to create a subtitled version of the video. If anyone wants a version of this file to use, please email me (unspiek@chromatism.net) and I’ll send it along as an attachment.

Amid heavy media coverage of the upcoming premiere, the general secretary of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, Aiman Mazyek, has urged followers of Islam to remain calm over the staging of the play and engage in a “critical and constructive dialogue” about the issues it raises.

But he also questions whether the play might go too far.

“Freedom of expression and of art is importance but offences against what is sacred in a religion is not something we value,” he said.

A police spokeswoman says authorities plan to step up security around the theatre during the performance.

The team in Potsdam say they had received permission from Mr Rushdie to adapt his novel and have invited him to the performance but they say it is unclear whether the author will attend.

A Rosetta Stone for “Fitna”

Part One

Back in January we helped publicize the plight of the British blogger Lionheart by posting translations of his work in as many different languages as possible. Our correspondents and readers stepped forward to act as translators, and we were able to show solidarity with Lionheart in seventeen different languages in addition to English.

Now it’s time to do the same for Geert Wilders and Fitna. It’s especially important after LiveLeak took down the main source of the movie — we need to get the word out in as many ways as possible.

Once again, with the help of CVF, I have called up our corps of volunteer translators, and once again they have answered the call of duty. We’re aiming for as many languages as we can get — not all of them European — and I will post the results here in batches of three or four, as they come in.

Our hope is that eventually the video will appear with subtitles in all the different languages. As of this writing, subtitled versions have appeared in French, Czech, and Danish.

With that in mind, and with the help of three volunteer transcribers, we’ve made a transcript of the English version with a time stamp to mark the sections. The translations will be posted with the time stamp in the left-hand margin to aid would-be subtitlers. I realize it’s not up to industry standard — which would be a time stamp for every line of subtitled text — but we’re amateurs here, and it will have to do.

LiveLeak Removes “Fitna”

I have just learned that LiveLeak was forced to remove Fitna from its servers. As far as I know, this is unprecedented.

This makes the virally-spread alternative sites that much more important. I mentioned a number of them in my previous post; to that list can be added a version with Danish subtitles on the Pirate Bay.

The LiveLeak version of the movie has been replaced with the following statement:

Spreading Virally

It doesn’t matter how the Dutch court rules today: Fitna is out, and is spreading virally.

People have been sending me links to the alternate sites since yesterday afternoon. The movie is available to download as well as to view, and has been subtitled in French and Czech.

Here’s my current list of sites:

The reaction to the movie is predictable — all across Europe the major politicians and public figures are falling all over themselves to denounce Geert Wilders and condemn the “divisive” nature of the film. The only public support from a major political party (besides the PVV) that I know of has come from Dansk Folkeparti, the Danish People’s Party. Everyone else is ready to throw Wilders to the ravening Islamic wolves, and thereby stave off the burning and looting in the Islamic ghettoes of major European cities. Fat chance.

In a peculiar twist, Kurt Westergaard, the creator of the “turban bomb” Motoon, says that Mr. Wilders has violated the copyright on his cartoon, and that he plans a lawsuit.

Muslim reaction has been relatively muted so far. The usual cries of “Islamophobia” are being heard, and a group of Jordanian media officials known as the “Messengers of God” says it will initiate legal action against Fitna. Overall, however, one senses that this is the calm before the storm. Wait until after everyone finishes praying and hears the sermon this evening.

Pandora’s box has been opened. The movie is out, and nothing short of shutting down the internet could stuff it back in the can.

Geert Wilders will likely be prosecuted and fined into penury by the judicial system of his own country because of this movie. He’s also a tempting target for the zealous mujahideen, and the bounty on his head will probably rise to astronomical levels.

This man has put his fortune and his life on the line to make a movie and publicize it as widely as possible. There’s no guarantee that he or his party will benefit from this gig, or even that he will survive.

It’s an important to remember that.

Why “Fitna”?

Why did Geert Wilders choose the word fitna as the title of his movie?

Recent news reports about the movie translate fitna as “strife”, “discord”, or “contention”. But, as with many Arabic words, the meaning is more nuanced than that, and defies literal translation into English.

I located a monograph on the word fitna (pdf format) at the Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at the University of Bergen. It’s by Humphrey J. Fisher, and is entitled “Text-Centred Research: Fitna as a Case Study and a Way Forward for Guests in the House of African Historiography”.

Dr. Fisher lists “temptation, trial; charm charmingness, attractiveness; enchantment captivation, fascination, enticement, temptation; infatuation; intrigue; sedition, riot, discord, dissension, civil strife” as some of the cited meanings of the word, but the most interesting part of his analysis is this conclusion: “…in whatever particular context fitna may be perceived, it is almost always a context within the Muslim community, setting believer against believer.”

In other words, fitna means “the instigation of the kind of trouble that sets Muslims at one another’s throats”.

So Mr. Wilders’ may have chosen an apt title, depending on how the responses to his movie unfold over the next weeks and months.

Here’s an excerpt from Dr. Fisher’s article (pp. 7-13). The original has footnotes and citations, but I left them out to make the text more readable:

Fitna

As a single example of the technical Islamic terms imbedded — alas, not always very accessibly — in the documents of After the Jihad, let us examine fitna, translated in Cowan and Wehr’s great dictionary as ‘temptation, trial; charm charmingness, attractiveness; enchantment captivation, fascination, enticement, temptation; infatuation; intrigue; sedition, riot, discord, dissension, civil strife’. It is but one of a considerable number of such terms in After the Jihad, but it is an especially good instance, not only being an essential element in this specific body of evidence, closely interwoven into the material which Hanson and Robinson have marshalled for us here, but also raising subtle and difficult questions, and, I believe, casting a new and clearer light over the whole vista of Muslim development in black Africa. We may tackle fitna from various angles: what is its meaning, in the Quran, in its early Muslim development, and in some of its later contexts? How is it used in the Umarian documents, both those gathered by Hanson and Robinson, and other such documents? And what are some instances of other, non-Umarian, West African usage? And what general conclusions may be drawn?

The meaning of fitna in the Quran

The term is prominent in the Quran, appearing specifically as fitna 34 times, and 26 times in a variety of verbal forms drawn from the same root, f.t.n. The overwhelming majority of these passages have the sense of a ‘trial’ or ‘temptation’, of ‘testing’ someone. L. Gardet in the Encyclopaedia of Islam (2) article on fitna speaks of many Quranic occurrences ‘with the sense of temptation or trial of faith’;12 Gardet refers here to R. Blachere’s French translation, tentation d’abjurer, being tempted to apostatise, to forswear or to abandon the faith. This French rendering, as we shall see, has been taken up with enthusiasm by two of al- hajj ‘Umar’s other major editors, Mahibou and Triaud, and made a lynchpin — not altogether persuasively, in my view — of their interpretation of ‘Umar’s theology.

But what of discord within the Muslim community, which is more than hinted at by Cowan and Wehr, and which is clearly of paramount importance in West Africa? Particularly among the verbal forms, it is difficult to find any in the Quran which lend themselves easily to the idea of such internal dissonance. When we turn to the noun fitna, however, we see a handful of passages which do in some measure point in such a direction. In one passage, those — and it seems that they must be Muslims, albeit errant Muslims — who misinterpret certain Quranic verses are condemned for seeking fitna, discord (3: 7). In two other passages, fitna is associated with the hypocrites, who are, almost by definition, either within the Muslim community, or claiming to be so. The first of these two passages discusses the possibility that the hypocrites might succeed in sowing dissension, fitna, amongst the committed Muslims (9: 47-8). The second passage linking hypocrites with fitna is 33:14.

In a fourth passage the reference is to people who, while not going so far as to declare themselves Muslims, had indeed made friendly overtures to the Muslim community, but who later showed hostility, fitna, against it (4: 91). These people, though not Muslims, not even errant or hypocritical Muslims, were nevertheless in some kind of special relationship with the Muslims: they were in a Muslim context.

There is also a trio of instances (2: 191-3 and 217, 8: 39) in which persecution — by implication persecution of Muslims by non-Muslims — has become a popular modern rendering. But it has not always been so,16 and there seems just a chance that internal strife, within the Muslim community, might be hinted at.

Early development of the term

Somewhat suprisingly, it is this idea, so very subordinate in the Quran, of internal dissension within the Muslim community, which has come to dominate the subsequent theological use of the term. The events beginning with the murder of ‘Uthman, a third of the four rightly-guided caliphs, and culminating in the seizure of power by Mufiawiya, founder of the Umayyad dynasty, all within a few years of the Prophet Muhammad’s death, came to be known as the first or great fitna, the fitna par excellence. Perhaps recalling how rapidly fitna had thus convulsed the early Muslim community, Usuman dan Fodio, al-hajj ‘Umar’s great precursor and model, in Hausaland about 1800, wrote that only the life of the Prophet amongst the umma, or nation, of Islam, preserved it from al-fitan (a plural form of fitna) — ‘discord’ is the equivalent chosen by Usuman’s Nigerian translator here. Fitna became a basic concept, of great symbolic value in the preoccupation of the early Muslim community with questions of continuity and survival — fitna, disintegration, representing of course failure to preserve the harmony of the community. Just such questions were of critical urgency in western Africa, a remote frontier of the Muslim world, and one exposed to many temptations and dangers. Gardet citing a considerable range of historical illustrations of fitna, defines it in these cases as ‘disturbances or even civil war involving the adoption of doctrinal attitudes which endanger the purity of the Muslim faith’.

Various contexts

The phenomenon of fitna may emerge in a very wide variety of different contexts. Wansbrough, speaking of the very early days of the development of Islam, says that the term symbolicalliy enshrined ‘hostility, or at least … tension, between secular authority and the ethical demands of a pious minority’. Or, to move into a very different area, fitna may describe the destabilising effect of women upon society.

A very unusual, interesting, and apposite example of fitna as internal discord of a religious kind comes from the historical novel, City of Wrong: a Friday in Jerusalem, written by a Muslim about the events immediately leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. In the story, the prosecutor calls upon the Jewish assembly to ‘cut off this disruptive evil’, referring to Jesus, and the word used in the Arabic original is fitna. The prosecutor speaks also of heresies, which threaten to undermine the Jewish people and faith from within. This is exactly right as an illustration of the common Muslim understanding of fitna; and I imagine that it may also be a fairly shrewd assessment of Jewish reactions at the time of Jesus’ trial.

However, in whatever particular context fitna may be perceived, it is almost always a context within the Muslim community, setting believer against believer. Fitna seems not to occur between the Muslim community on the one hand, and independent non-Muslims on the other; though, as will become clear a little further along in the argument, and as we delve into the data supplied by Hanson and Robinson, I suggest that fitna may indeed occur between Muslim and dependent non-Muslims, whose status is fundamentally defined (at least in Muslim eyes by their position as dhimmis (protected, albeit second-class, persons) within an overall Muslim hierarchy.

Defaming Islam, Act 2

I’ve written previously about the UN’s mischief concerning the “defaming of religions”. That time it was the General Assembly; this time it’s UNHRC.

Yesterday the UN Human Rights Council rushed out a resolution to protect Islam from all those nasty writers and artists, just in time for the release of Geert Wilders’ movie. According to Iranian Press TV:

The UN Human Rights Council has passed a resolution expressing concern about the defamation of religions and urging states to prohibit it.

The UN Human Rights Council adopted Thursday the resolution — proposed by Islamic countries — on a 21-10 vote over the opposition of Europe and Canada.

EU countries, including France, Germany and Britain, voted against because they wanted to stop what thay [sic] called using religious anti-defamation laws to limited free speech.

But the Saudi delegation told the council ‘ it is regrettable that there are false translations and interpretations of the freedom of expression.’

Ah yes, false translations. Getting the Declaration of Independence into Arabic and Farsi must be a chore, since “freedom” and “liberty” have no exact translations in those languages. “Not yet stoned to death”, perhaps? “Still at large from the muttawa”?

It certainly is one-sided. Have you heard any rabbis calling for a law against defaming Judaism? Try getting that one past the UNHRC.

All for simply making movies, speaking their minds, drawing cartoons, and writing books.

And “Islam is one of the most obvious victims of aggressions”?

What’s the Arabic word for “chutzpah”?

The resolution “notes with deep concern the intensification of the campaign of defamation of religions and the ethnic and religious profiling of Muslim minorities in the aftermath of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.”

This author notes with deep concern the slaughter of three thousand innocent people in the name of Allah on Sept. 11, 2001.

It expresses “grave concern at the serious recent instances of deliberate stereotyping of religions, their adherents and sacred persons in the media,’’ referring to insulting caricatures Of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) published in a Danish magazine and The film Fitna made by Dutch MP Geert Wilders — critical of the Koran — which is posted on the internet.

Remember: the above paragraph was written and the resolution was passed before anyone had even seen the movie.

The resolution also “urges states to take actions to prohibit the dissemination … of racist and xenophobic ideas’’ and material that would incite to religious hatred.

This UN drivel seems like nonsense. But I think it’s the wave of the future.

People like B. Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton — not to mention certain Supreme Court justices — want to hand over the decisions of American jurisprudence to the tender mercies of the UN, so that the deliberations of international law may be taken into consideration.

Well, folks, the output from the UNHRC is “international law” at its finest.

Oh, yes, it’s international enough — every member of the OIC is on board.

But “law” — that’s another matter entirely.
