A group of Afghans in Mazar-i-Sharif gathered outside the UN compound to protest the burning of a Koran in a church in Florida. The demonstration proceeded peacefully until a group of armed men arrived and began shooting at UN employees. At least twelve people were killed, many of them foreigners, and two of them were beheaded. The mob set the UN building on fire.
In other news, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has promised to repatriate 100 refugees every day to North Africa. Most of the migrants in a camp in Maduria escaped, leaving only 400 behind. The rest fanned out into the countryside, or converged on the train station in Taranto, hoping to catch a train going north.
Meanwhile, the crackdown on protesters in Syria continues. Government snipers are said to be stationed on rooftops, targeting demonstrators in the streets below. At least seven more people were killed.
