Gates of Vienna News Feed 10/28/2012

Gates of Vienna News Feed 10/28/2012Hurricane Sandy is predicted to make landfall in New Jersey about 24 hours from now. It is expected to merge with two other weather systems to create a hybrid “Frankenstorm” a thousand miles wide, one of the most dangerous and destructive storms ever to strike this part of the East Coast.

The latest projections of the storm track show it coming ashore almost exactly at Atlantic City, and then moving inland to pass just south of Philadelphia. The greatest storm surge, however — nine to twelve feet — is expected to be in Manhattan and Long Island Sound. New York City is in the process of shutting down, and thousands of people are being evacuated.

It seems that we will escape the worst of the tempest here in Central Virginia. We’ll get some rain — it’s already begun — and there is a high wind alert, with gusts of up to 40mph (65kmh) possible. That’s not anywhere near as bad as last summer’s Derecho, but we may still lose our electricity. So if we don’t show up tomorrow morning, you’ll know why.

Fausta is much closer to the path of the eye than we will be. Come Tuesday morning, she may be blogging from her rooftop while she waits for the helicopter to lift her to safety.
