Senate Republicans and Democrats cut a deal on a new tax plan, and the House signed onto it, thus averting the “fiscal cliff”. Republicans agreed to higher taxes and lower spending cuts. In return the Democrats agreed not to cut military spending as much as they wanted to, and said they would invite Republicans to the post-cliff cocktail party. OK, so I made that last part up.
In other news, French “youths” celebrated the new year by torching nearly 1,200 cars.
