Gates of Vienna News Feed 5/29/2010

Gates of Vienna News Feed 5/29/2010An electronics factory run by the Foxconn company in the Chinese city of Shenzhen has experienced a highly unusual number of suicides among its employees — 11 successful attempts in 2010 alone. The victims are young workers from rural provinces, and their families say that the Taiwan-based company bears a responsibility for the deaths, thanks to the long hours and draconian working conditions imposed on employees who work on the factory floor. The families demand compensation from Foxconn, and have demonstrated outside the company’s headquarters in Taipei.

In other news, a public community college in California has established a scholarship fund for immigrant students, including illegal immigrants.
