Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/11/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/11/2011There has been another deadly attack on Coptic Christians in Egypt. This time the incident occurred on a train, and according to some reports the perpetrator was a policeman. Witnesses say the gunman boarded the train and appeared to look around until he identified a group of Christians. He then shot and killed one man, and wounded five others.

In other news, Barack Obama has formally buried the “special relationship” between the USA and the UK by declaring France to be America’s biggest ally. Meanwhile, Turkish farmers who live near the Greek border have expressed their support for Greece’s proposed border fence, saying that it will cut down on the flow of illegal migrants who trample their crops.

Heinz-Christian Strache: Defending the Judeo-Christian Occident

Below are two videos showing subtitled excerpts from a speech given by Heinz-Christian Strache, the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ), during a symposium in Vienna on December 23, 2010. Both videos are embedded below the jump, to foil the Blogger bug. They are followed by a transcript.

For more on this speech and related issues, see Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff’s report.

Readers who follow European affairs closely will realize what a sea-change this speech represents. This is, after all, Austria, and the FPÖ is the most demonized of all major Austrian political parties. It is supposedly one of the most irredeemably anti-Semitic parties in Europe. So what is going on here?

What is going on here is that World War 2 ended sixty-five years ago. This is not your grandfather’s Europe. European anti-Semitism still abounds, but 95% of it can be found on the Socialist Left in unholy alliance with Islam.

The FPÖ represents the “New European Right”. Along with its fellow parties — Sverigedemokraterna, Vlaams Belang, Dansk Folkeparti, Schweizerische Volkspartei, Die Freiheit, De Partij Voor de Vrijheid, Lega Nord, and others — it is awake to the reality and the imminence of the Islamization of Europe.

This also means it has awakened to the common cause it shares with Israel and the Jews.

Update: I’m told that further excerpts from Mr. Strache’s speech are in the pipeline, and will be translated and subtitled in due course. Stay tuned.

Many thanks to the Counterjihad Collective for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for YouTubing these videos:

Guramit, Interrupted

Guramit Singh, the spokesman for the English Defence League, was interviewed by Roberto Perrone a few days ago on BBC radio. For readers who are interested in listening to it, I’ve embedded the video of the interview at the bottom of this post to avoid the “Blogger bug”.

In addition to his obvious hostility towards his guest, I was struck by Mr. Perrone’s repeated interruptions. Every time Mr. Singh worked up a bit of momentum in making his point, he was brutally cut off by his host.

Nick, who blogs at The Frozen North, noticed the same thing. He sent this analysis of the subliminal (but formal) rules of conversation which were broken repeatedly by the interviewer:

For a long time, English dictionaries and grammars used written language to show what ‘proper’ English should be like. The spoken word was either seen as inferior, or it was neglected altogether. This has changed over the last twenty years or so. To the layperson, everyday speech can appear disorderly and incomplete, but many linguists now view conversational English as ‘language at full stretch’ (Carter 2004: 26) and argue that everyday speech is governed by linguistic rules that allow people to interact meaningfully with one another in real time (Maybin 2001: 10). The layperson may not be consciously aware of these rules, but all native speakers use them whenever they engage in conversation (Pridham, 2006: 243).

Turn-taking rules have been studied in depth, and they are well understood. The work of Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson has strongly influenced this area of conversational analysis (Maybin 2001: 10, Pridham 2006: 684). Turn transition is accomplished at ‘turn-transition relevance places’. It has been shown that during everyday conversation, a speaker will naturally project a completion point as they speak. The speaker is entitled to the time it takes to reach that point, at which time another participant may enter, or re-enter, the conversation (Psathas 1995: 37).

Pridham asserts that people often communicate using a spoken narrative (2006: 632). Schenkein has shown that the phenomenon of ‘telling stories’ emerges naturally from turn-by-turn talk, and that spoken narratives are understood by English speakers to be a coherent conversational unit (1978 cited by Psathas 1995: 21-22).

A speaker may use such a narrative, or they may use shorter utterances in order to make meaning during conversation, but within the British sociocultural context, a speaker retains the right to speak until they indicate to a listener that their story has been completed. Interrupting other speakers is not considered to be good conversational behaviour (Pridham 2006: 260).

In the course of the BBC radio interview in question, Mr. Perrone interrupted Mr. Singh several times, at approximately 1.14, 1.43, 2.02, 2.15, 5.35 and 6.48. Of course, any linguistic rules which have been found to apply to everyday conversation may not apply in exactly the same way during a radio interview, since the context in which language is being produced is slightly different. Nevertheless, it is generally understood within British culture that if one invites someone else to speak, it is considered impolite to interrupt them before they have finished speaking (i.e. before they have reached a transition relevance place). This applies to a semi-formal context such as a BBC radio interview as well as everyday speech.

It’s Still Raining in Queensland

Toowoomba flood, 2011

There’s an excellent series of reports on the floods in Australia at Kae’s Bloodnut Blog. The blog’s proprietress has been liveblogging events from her place at Laidey, outside of Toowoomba. Just click the link and start scrolling; there are lots of photos.

Charge Against Tommy Robinson Dropped

I just received this brief message from the English Defence League:

Hi people, it’s Tommy Robinson.

My case has been thrown out of court. The police attempted to fit me up, and it’s failed miserably. I apologise to anyone who has booked days off.

Your support through this has been much appreciated. God bless and no surrender.

Gang Rape in Bendigo

Cultural Enrichment News

The Meaning of the Black Flag of Jihad

The Black Flag of Jihad

A reader emailed this morning and asked me to post the meaning of the text shown on the Black Flag of Jihad. I don’t read Arabic myself, but I’ve been told that the flag displays the shahada, the basic statement of the Islamic faith:

“La illaha ila Allah, wa Muhammadun rasul Allah.”

Or more fully (including the implied affirmative declaration):

“[’ašhadu ’an] la ilaha illa-llah, wa [’ašhadu ’anna] muhammadan rasulu-llah.”

Which means:

“[I testify that] there is no god (ilah) but Allah, and [I testify that] Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”

Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/10/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/10/2011Jared Lee Loughner and Sheriff Clarence Dupnik continue to dominate the news. The meme of the “right-wing hate climate” is still dominant, even as new information pours in that erodes any meaningful connection between the alleged shooter and the tea parties. The most interesting news so far on the Tucson shooting is percolating in the blogs, but has yet to emerge in the MSM.

In other news, the Swedish mother-in-law of one of the men accused in the Danish terror plot says she had no idea that her son-in-law had become an extremist. Meanwhile, housing prices in the UK are expected to fall to 2004 levels, even as taxes rise significantly.

Conservative Free Speech Diehards — or Blowhards?

Dr. Andrew Bostom has weighed in on the plight of Lars Hedegaard, the Danish historian and journalist who is being tried this month in Denmark on hate speech charges. Regular readers will remember that Mr. Hedegaard’s crime was to publicly discuss the high incidence of family rape among Muslims.

Below are some excerpts from what Dr. Bostom had to say at Pajamas Media:

Will Conservative Media Elites Defend Lars Hedegaard? (Including, “A Guide for the Islamically-Perplexed”)

by Andrew G. Bostom

Conservative Free Speech Diehards — or Blowhards?

Lars HedegaardThis past Friday, 1/7/11, I received a plaintive appeal on behalf of my colleague, Danish journalist and historian Lars Hedegaard, President of the Danish Free Press Society and The International Free Press Society (IFPS). My response to the appeal is included at the end of this essay as a succinct guide to Islamically-perplexed, high-profile US conservative media elites who, till now, have entirely ignored the burgeoning crisis epitomized by Lars Hedegaard’s current plight. It is well past time for these self-anointed champions of free speech to weigh-in publicly and offer a robust defense of my colleague — and theirs — Lars Hedegaard.

Whom am I addressing in conservative media, specifically? All of the best-known and “highest-rated” (as they are constantly reminding us, at any rate) radio and television personalities — Mr. No Spin, “What say you?”; “Dittos” to you, Rush; Don’t continue to be a mute mime clown on this matter, Glenn; You’re not ringing in support of freedom of speech, Sean; and I’ll indeed bite you if you don’t open your loud, but highly intelligent mouth in support of Hedegaard, Mark.

As for the conservative, or “center-right” print/on-line media icons — the editorial boards of the National Review, Weekly Standard, and Wall Street Journal — your continued silence is craven and hypocritical, not golden.

Here is the crux of Mr. Hedegaard’s case, and some background. As the IFPS appeal notes,

This Flag Was Made for Burning

There’s been a lot of discussion lately about the Black Flag of Jihad, especially the one that EDL leader Tommy Robinson tore out of the hands of a mujahid on Remembrance Day.

Many readers have suggested that English demonstrators should be burning the black flag instead of the Koran — since the Muslims have set a precedent by burning the Union Jack, then burning the jihad flag can hardly be a public order offense, right?

Zenster had an even better idea, and suggested this hybrid flag for burning (or any other forms of Islamophobic entertainment):

SwastiJihad Flag

This is an appropriate icon for our Islamized times, and burning it — at least the top left-hand section of it — can hardly be offensive to the politically correct anti-racists who run our countries.

Thank you Zenster, for your timely inspiration! I suggest that everyone borrow this flag icon for their Counterjihad websites and flyers. Anyone who wants a high-res png file of the same design should email me, gatesofvienna (at) chromatism (dot) net.

The Dhimmification of the Red Cross

Ummah ICRC

Nicolai Sennels sends this account of his correspondence with the Red Cross about the organization’s aversion to overt symbols of Christmas. The exchange was previously published (in Danish) at 180grader.

My email correspondence with the Red Cross concerning Christmas decorations
by Nicolai Sennels

Confronted with the unpleasant news that Red Cross is now forbidding Christmas decorations in their shops, I decided to write their Danish office:

From: Nicolai Sennels
To: The Red Cross
Date: December 22nd, 2010
Subject: The red cross is Christian

According to Christian Daily (December 22nd, 2010), the Red Cross in Great Britain has decided to remove all Christmas decorations in order to avoid ‘provoking” non-Christians. Spokesman Hans Bech Gregersen says that the cross “is a symbol of protection, not a Christian symbol.” That is not true. Red Cross was founded by the Swiss Henry Dunant in 1863. The Red Cross symbol is an inversion of the Swiss flag (square with a white cross). The cross in the Swiss flag symbolizes the Christian cross. The white cross in the Swiss flag is ascribed to the Theban Legion, which consisted of 6666 men who converted to Christianity and was killed in the year 286. The Theban Legion is remembered every year on the 22nd of September. The oldest depiction of the Swiss flag is from 1513 in the Lucerne Chronicles. In these chronicles the white cross is shown together with the body of Christ. So, Red Cross: The cross that you use in your logo and your name has Christian roots, and that is no shame.

Yours,
Nicolai Sennels

Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/9/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/9/2011Unlike their western neighbors, Central European nations are not experiencing massive immigration. As a result of its current demographic free-fall, plus a high emigration rate, Poland’s population is expected to decline by three million in the next 25 years. Romania is facing something similar, and some calculations project a Roma majority by the year 2050, due to the high gypsy birth rate.

In other news, Algeria and Tunisia are both experiencing riots over high unemployment and rapidly rising prices. India is also suffering from inflation: food prices rose 18% during the past year.

Every Tragedy is a Political Opportunity

Loughner flag burning

I swore I wasn’t going to write anything about yesterday’s mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona.

It’s not really in our bailiwick, and there is already so much coverage out there about it. Open any news site, and the top story — probably the top eight or ten stories — will be about Jared Lee Loughner (the alleged murderer), Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Judge John Roll, the other victims, the reaction of politicians, interviews with mourning families, etc. etc.

And there’s not much to add to what the bloggers are saying. Jim at Gateway Pundit has the best coverage — just open his site and keep scrolling. Or go over to Michelle Malkin; she kept updating her post all day yesterday.

However, I’m interested enough in the political memes to give them a brief mention. The political spin started almost from the moment the gunshots quit echoing in front of that Safeway in Tucson. When the first news alert came in, I told Dymphna: “If the guy who did this is white, it’ll be the Republicans’ fault. Wait for it.”

And, unfortunately, that was exactly what happened. As soon as the name and photo of the shooter emerged, the talking heads and liberal opinionators began assigning the blame to the tea parties and Sarah Palin. When Mr. Loughner’s YouTube channel was discovered, his obsession with the currency was cited: “Aha! A gold bug!” And he hated the government — he must be a right-wing crank.

Everyone pushing this meme ignored the fact that the kid listed The Communist Manifesto as one of his favorite books (along with Mein Kampf — he liked a full smorgasbord of socialism). They overlooked the interviews with acquaintances who said he had very liberal political views.

Nope, the “right-wing crank” meme was their story, and they were sticking to it. The New York Times wrote an appalling piece fabricating a conservative nut-job framework for Jared Lee Loughner on the flimsiest of evidence, spun from the finest gossamer.

But it was Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik who won the prize for the Most Outrageous Politicizer of a Horrible Tragedy. Given that he is the lead investigator assigned to the case, in any sane society he would have refrained from speculating about the political motives of the suspect without a shred of evidence — and on national television, too. But we don’t live in a sane society, and the sheriff is a loyal Democrat, so that is exactly what he did.
