Gates of Vienna News Feed 10/9/2011A demonstration today in Tahrir Square in Cairo turned into open warfare between the demonstrators and the police. The Copts had organized a peaceful protest against the recent burning of their churches, and also continuing violence against their homes, businesses, and persons. However, they were attacked by spectators and police, and military troops were brought in. Some news stories say that the Copts took guns from injured soldiers and fought back. The latest reports say that at least 24 people were killed, 17 of them soldiers.

In other news, the debt crisis has turned violent in Italy, with angry students storming Moody’s office in Milan. The youngsters were protesting cuts in education, and threw eggs and paint at Moody’s corporate offices. Meanwhile, inflation in Italy is the highest it has been since October 2008, and 10% of Italian workers are reportedly “irregular”.
