Gates of Vienna News Feed 3/20/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 3/20/2011NATO forces continued to do damage to Libya’s air defenses today, and warplanes began bombing other military assets, including the command-and-control building in Col. Qaddafi’s compound in Tripoli. Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned that it was important not to exceed the mandate of the UN by extending NATO’s mission beyond the original stated goals. The Arab League is already unhappy, and has objected to what it sees as the duplicitous behavior of NATO in doing more than simply enforcing a no-fly zone.

Meanwhile, electricity has been restored to two more reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power complex in Japan. The situation continues to stabilize, and plant officials expect to have the cooling systems functioning again within the next few days.

In other news, violent protests continue in Yemen, Syria, and Jordan. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has announced increased social benefits and a higher minimum wage in an attempt to stave off popular discontent in his kingdom.

Operation Odyssey Dawn, what is this all about have I missed something will I look back in a few years time and kick myself for not recognising the dawn of a new crusade to liberate the Mediterranean rim or is it just a case of Mad Dogs and deranged Englishmen degrading the British Armed Forces for their future role as dhimmi mercenaries.

British MPs have voted to support action in Libya. The Commons motion - was backed by 557 MPs and opposed by 13.

Political cowardice affraid that if they had voted against they would be open to the vox pop charge of supporting Gaddafi, Western civilization is dead in the U.K. with such a low threshold for military intervention doubt if a future operation such as Cast Lead would be possible.

I would surmise that a large percentage of those M.P's. whom voted in favour had Israel in their target for the next low threshold - "no fly-zone".
