French Petition to Ban the Burka in Public

A petition to ban the burka and face veils in public in France is available for signatures, even by non-French people. Gaia sent us the following message, translated from the French:

An extremely important on-line action has been launched by Riposte Laïque (30/40,000 readers). This is a petition addressed to French politicians, Deputies, and Senators, asking them to propose and vote for a law banning burkas and face veils in public places. Certainly this is also of concern to other countries menaced by Islamic supremacism.

See the petition in French.

For the first time Riposte Laïque (RL) has taken the initiative of translating one of its texts (the petition) into English and thus RL sees the Anglosphere; also the SITA group has offered its services to RL to act as an interface between the French and English campaigners.

An English speaker can act by:

1. Reading the petition in English, then by signing the petition. Details at the bottom of the page bringing you to the French version of the petition must be filled in with:

Nom = Surname
Prénom = Christian name
Statut = Status or occupation + country
Votre adresse email = Your email address
Valider = Send

2. Spreading this petition in every possible way, mentioning Riposte Laïque as the source.

Nom veut dire Family name
Prénom veut dire First name
Statut veut dire Status or occupation+country
Votre adresse email veut dire your email necessary to confirm your signature
Valider veut dire Send

This is what makes my liberal side turns in pain. Take this people out of France but do not make laws that will make everyone lives hell.

If such a law should be passed, I think the Frensh need to be very carefull how they construct it. If it's a law that ban all forms of coverings of peoples faces, it could probably be justified. If the law is against certain religious symbols, clothing or beliefs motivating said symbols and clothing, they would put themselfs in a place where it's hard to say what to ban or not. And it would be a law that could be abused depending on who's in power.
