Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/4/2012

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/4/2012During a routine traffic stop, French police detained a woman who they determined was a Basque separatist wanted by the Spanish authorities. Although she was a French citizen, and her activities were not illegal under French law, she was taken into custody and handed over to the Spanish government. This process was made possible by the European Arrest Warrant, which allows citizens in one EU country to be arrested and transferred to another country where there is a warrant outstanding for their arrest, without the necessity of formal extradition.

In other news, the Saudi authorities are planning to demolish some of the most ancient shrines in Mecca and replace them with modern buildings to be used for housing or business. Islamic fundamentalists consider the shrines to be “idolatry”, and so are in favor of their destruction.

This is one of the most chilling pieces of news yet. Unfortunately, the US Constitution contains a vague provision that the US is bound by treaties negotiated by the President, and ratified by the Senate. It is unclear, I think, whether such treaties are subject to the usual Constitutional protections, but they definitely can affect US citizens.

The problem is, there is absolutely no way to ensure that a malevolent government, combined with a complacent or ignorant electorate, can be forever prevented from trampling on the rights and freedoms of citizens.

Just wait until these fools admit Turkey into the EU, and they start issuing such warrants (Salmon Rushdie anyone?) to enforce Sharia across Europe.

They don't need to wait for Turkey's admission because they're already doing it.

The EU is a totalitarian organization, cross the line and you become their enemy like the EDL people.

Luckily we're not bound by any treaty with the EU - yet. But if Hussein Obama gets back in, you can bet he'll sign such a treaty. It's a slick end run around the 1st Amendment.

The Lefties will love it.
