The festival organizers arranged for the author to participate instead by a satellite video link. However, at the last moment, as Mr. Rushdie was on his way to the studio to begin his talk, the Jaipur police warned the organizers that they would be unable to prevent violence if Mr. Rushdie spoke as scheduled.
That was too much for the festival leaders, and they cut the video link to avoid inciting the Muslim mob that had gathered outside the venue.
Here’s a TV news report about what happened:

We should look at this as an object lesson. The more Muslim foreigners we allow into the USA the closer we get to having this happen here. And of course Obama is bringing in loads of them, which angers me..
I think that India would be well advised to complete the chaotic 1947 partition by exporting 70m Muslims to Pakistan and 70m to Bangladesh and "repatriate" the Hindus, Sikhs and Christians from those countries to India.
India would gain people prepared to work and support the Government and not present a problem (generally that is. Hindus still wage war on Christians even in India). They would lose the troublemakers and the 5th column.
Yes I know that this would require some serious thinking and conditions but it surely has to be right. It isn't "tolerant of religion" but since when have Muslims, and Pakistan, been "tolerant".
I would favor going through with a morally justified activity of promoting free-speech that would be regarded by Muslims as "provocative" and being secretly prepared to respond to any violence with extraordinary prejudice. This is not currently possible in India for political reasons. I suppose it isn't possible in much of Europe either for legal and political reasons.
But perhaps an event could be staged somewhere with a 'surprising' level of event security ready to deal with any Islamic violence that occurred.
