Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/5/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/5/2011249 women were killed last year in Bangladesh by husbands angry over their wives’ families’ failure to pay the promised dowry. It has become increasingly common for Bangladeshi husbands to set their wives on fire to exact revenge for the shame of not receiving a dowry.

Meanwhile, in Yemen at least 17 people were killed by government forces during the suppression of street protests.

In other news, Moody’s has downgraded Portugal’s bond rating, and the interest on 5-year bonds has risen past the 10% mark. The downgrading of Greece’s bond rating has contributed to the slide of the Greek stock market, which dropped for the sixth day in a row.

Some good news from Japan: workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant have successfully plugged the crack through which highly radioactive water was leaking into the sea.

Dear Baron:

Knowing that you'll be out of the

ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER. Hope you'll be back sooner not later!

When East End Gay Pride was cancelled, a colleague emailed me to say, ‘This is a bad day for liberalism in London.’ And in many ways, it was.
end quote.

It is not a bad day for liberalism.
It's a bad day for all of humanity.
The presence of ideological diversity in the organization of Gay Pride indicates that it really is a movement of humanitarian concerns.
Wherever it is frustrated by Islam, and Islam is petty and stupid, humanity will suffer.
This is not propriety.
It is cowardice.
When will homosexuals of every stripe REALLY grow some guts?

"We’re asking all supporters to “queer up” our contingent as we parade our politics against Israeli Apartheid through Toronto. Bring your sassy selves, in pink, green, and glitter!
Although the ban has been reversed, the occupation of Palestine and Israel’s apartheid policies are still in place. More than ever, we need the queer community and the rest of Toronto to hear our message against Israeli apartheid, and to understand why this is a queer issue. We need to speak out against the pinkwashing of the occupation, and call for queers of conscience to boycott tourism in Israel."

I'm glad you brought this up. It indicates a severe lack of perspective on the part of the out/proud movement.
Every day, homosexuals are treated unjustly, every year, at least some die because of nothing more than who they love.
How they can take on issues like Israel/Palestine and how they can side with what is truly "the most retrograde force" in world history is beyond me.
If anything, they are only enabling their executioners, piling up the fuel that will feed the pyres in which they'll be burnt.
They weave the ropes on which they will hang publicly.
And they have no idea they're doing it.

@ Van Grungy
What are you, a nut? Go try to hold a gay pride parade in Gaza and see what happens...
Your twisted logic just escapes me.
Israel accepts gays and allows gay parades. Try it in Gaza and call back you idiot.

babs, I think you missed the quotation marks around Van Grungy's closing paragraphs.

The closing row of equal signs was another indicator that an outside opinion was being cited.

This gay/left alliance isn't inevitable. I think gays have very poor leadership, and as I've mentioned before, part of the cause is that the other side hasn't been welcoming enough, so many gays hesitate to be the first to openly break with the leftists.

If only the most vocal CJ people didn't rant against homosexuality in the same breath as pedophilia. No mainstream, non pedo gay person will listen to that without assuming they're not welcome in the CJ and related movements such as Tea Party.

This is a more important issue than most people here realize. Most people say, we don't need those 2%, they're so dysfunctional, anyway. Well, what about the leverage of a small percentage of people who are concentrated in the arts? Who writes the tv scripts? Wouldn't we rather have Hollywood on our side than not? I promise, if the CJ made an effort to say something reasonable about gays now and then, Hollywood, which is very very gay and gay friendly, would make more shows we like.

The anti-Israel contingent in gay events is a symptom of something some of us are doing. If some of us stopped going on and on and on about the gays have sex with children, they want to teach it in school, they make anti-Christian art, they're all screwed up, the other gays who don't fit that stereotype would listen to the more reasonable things we say.
