The German newspaper Der Spiegel has broken a major news story about American soldiers in Afghanistan who wantonly killed civilians, fabricated stories about being attacked to justify the killings, and photographed themselves with the bodies as with trophies, occasionally hacking off fingers and to keep as souvenirs. The newspaper published three of the photos, and NATO commanders in Afghanistan are warning their troops to prepare for the backlash. Coming on the heels of the war in Libya — is it a coincidence that Germany opposed action in Libya? — this looks like it may cause President Obama a major headache.
News from Libya has pushed Japan out of the headlines, so it’s worth noting that the situation at the Fukushima nuclear plant continues to stabilize. Electricity has been connected to two more reactors, and the spikes in radiation are gradually dropping. Quietly, without a big fuss, the Japanese are taking care of the problem.

Another bit of news is that pastor Terry Jones oversaw the burning of the Koran in his church yesterday. Pakistan news has already reported it.
Sit back and wait for the backlash, and just pray that noone is killed by these maniacs!
Just to keep you up to date with the Indonesian Inquisition...

You're not going to see much of a reaction to the photos of the dead. Muslims routinely do far worse. It's messing with the Koran that hits them at their cultural core, they'll find the photos boring and you won't see the predicted riots, etc. except for some astroturf in Europe.

The story of the solidiers (sic) wh9o murdered Afgan Civilians has been reported on ever since the Army began a formal investigation on it's own iniative.
What is new is that Der Spiegel somehow managed to get hold of pictures that were part of the potential evidence but authorized for release.
I hope they have not spoiled the prosecution with that stunt.
