The UAE is in the midst of a record heat wave, with temperatures soaring to 45º C (113º F) during the day, and dropping to 33º C (91º F) at night. The heat is so intense that it has overwhelmed the capacity of the local power station to generate enough electricity for all the air conditioners — the generators use diesel fuel, and Sharjah has run out of diesel reserves. Many residents have taken to their air-conditioned cars to escape the unbearable heat.
