According to Yahoo,
The United States backed Muslims on Friday against European newspapers that printed caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in a move that could help America’s battered image in the Islamic world.
Strike that. The Department of State is backing the Muslim outrage. The United States is not.
“These cartoons are indeed offensive to the belief of Muslims,” State Department spokesman Kurtis Cooper said in answer to a question.
State Department, you don’t speak for me, or for millions of other Americans who think this orchestrated tantrum is nothing but a ploy to distract us from Iran’s nefarious plans, plans which will bear fruit in March.
This latest announcement reaches a level of stupidity that far surpasses the many other jaw-dropping gaffes that Foggy Bottom — or should I say Fiskie Bottom? — has stumbled into previously.
My disappointment in Dr. Rice’s department is boundless. She was going to make a difference, right? Well, she’s a difference without a distinction. It’s disgusting.
Really, is Foggy Bottom taking its marching orders from Robert Fisk?
It’s amazing how closely his pronouncements and theirs resemble one another.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: According to Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs, this story, at least in the form given in this news account, may be a hoax.

I, personally, thought that our response would be better served as yet another cartoon of Mohammed telling them to commit indecent acts upon themselves.
Hear, hear. Dhimmi-whipped wimps at the State Department will only embolden the Islamic enemy.
It’s too bad Rice (or Powell) didn't clean house. I didn't expect much from Powell but Rice was an unknown … until now. What a disappointment she’s been. Her recent comments after the Hamas victory, “the Palestinian people want piece,” was bizarre (as I commented with amazement on my blog.)
It’s been four years since 9/11, there is no excuse for such ignorance in the general population yet alone for the Secretary of State.
Moussy,
You're so cute when you're bashing Barbra. I, too, would love to see that narcissist with the room temperature IQ hidden under *something*. A burqa will do nicely.
Ye Gods - Say it isn't so .... many of the news stories currently running are "America backs Muslims over cartoons as thousands voice anger ..." or similar.
I cannot believe PC has gone so far as US government policy, promoting "tolerance" and "consideration of others" over free speech.
No way. I refuse to believe it. Somebody tell me its a hoax.
If it IS true, then the US Dept of State is pulling a "France." I say give me MORE cartoons of mohammed. Let the screaming flag-burning muslims continue to show their true face. It's a good thing because people are beginning to wake up out there as to what the islamic movement is all about--inflexible intolerance! It's their way or no way.
Appeasement will only bring on more of the same. Caving in will set a precedent, emboldening them to demand that we give up more and more rights, freedoms, concessions and accommodations. To do so is cultural suicide.
I'm disappointed the State Department would announce anything but complete support for freedom of speech, especially given that the global caliphate has not yet been established to grant Muslim clerics sovereignty over Danish newspapers (or any others). To apologize for this "insult to Islam" on the grounds it is reasonable to be sensitive to other culture's feelings, is to point the ski tips down a very steep slippery slope the Cult of Complaint (formerly RoP) has thoughtfully marked out for us in other countries. We'd have to be blind not to see the signs.
