Human Rights Activist Must Give Way to Asylum-Seekers

Cultural Enrichment News

The following article from the German periodical Junge Freiheit has so many PC MC twists and turns that it’s hard to fisk it properly.

Some of the notable features of the unfortunate events in Zurich:

  • The former director of the Foundation Against Racism and Anti-Semitism is unhappy because he was evicted to make room for asylum-seekers.
  • Some disgruntled Kosovars suffered the same inconvenience.
  • The building in question is publicly owned, because private property owners are generally reluctant to let their premises to asylum-seeking culture-enrichers.

The article doesn’t mention it, but I suspect the long-term solution will be to crack down on the rental practices of private landlords by using the “racism and xenophobia” statutes, which exist even in Switzerland.

Many thanks to JLH for the translation:

Human Rights Activist Must Give Way to Asylum-Seekers

Zurich: Because asylum-seekers were to be quartered in their building, several Swiss had to leave their apartments. Among them is the former director of the Foundation Against Racism and Anti-Semitism, Michael Chiller-Glaus. The town of Pfäffikon in the Zurich Oberland area had given the renters notice for the end of the month. Chiller-Gaus, who had to seek a new home for his family of four, showed little sympathy for the action. “That can’t be: putting families out on the street to make place for new people,” he said to BLICK magazine.

Asylum-seekers not popular with landlords.

Chiller-Gaus emphasized that he had been lucky to find a new place to live, “My Kosovar neighbors weren’t so lucky. They have to leave at the end of the month and have no prospect of a new apartment.”

The town defended their methods. Private property owners would refuse to rent living space to asylum-seekers. “So we have to put our own (municipal) residences at their disposal,” said the administrator of the properties, Martin Weber.

The Foundation Against Racism and Anti-Semitism has taken as its task registering allegedly xenophobic instances like “racism by authorities” and “discrimination” “Our cause is furthering public awareness of tolerance, human rights and peaceful co-existence and actively standing up against discrimination.”

Priceless. Herr Chiller-Gaus, director of the Foundation Against Racism and Anti-Semitism, gets to drink from his own cup of hemlock. I hope he enjoys this little lesson in:

Be very careful about what you ask for because one day you may get it.

I guess that's what happens when you rely on the state for your housing...

OTOH, if a private landlord was forced to kick out a good tenant - that's really messed up.
