Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/2/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/2/2011The outbreak of E. coli in Europe was originally blamed on organic Spanish cucumbers, and claimed mostly Germans as victims. It is now thought to be caused by a virulent mutant strain of the bacteria, according to WHO. The authorities have backed off from the original assertion about cucumbers, and Spain is demanding compensation for damage to its agricultural sector. Russia, however, has reacted by banning the importation of vegetables from the EU.

In other news, radical Islamic protesters, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood, demonstrated in front of the Syrian Embassy in Amman, Jordan. They were protesting the crackdown on demonstrators in Syria, and referred to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as a “butcher”.

Oxfam , in calling for a radical rethink on food policy, has seriously lost its way and is dealing with the effect rather than the cause. Not the best way of solving a problem.

ALL food aid programmes simply encourage the ignorant and illiterate to breed faster which actually worsens the problem. After all someone else will provide.
The world is already overpopulated and this is the main continuing and increasing cause of starvation.
Droughts, floods, and natural disasters do of course happen and support should be provided in those cases.
There will be a limit beyond which no additional food can be grown. Resources are limited and land cannot be manufactured. There is a finite amount.
Oxfam would be far better educating in food self sufficiency and birth control.
I don't particularly advocate China's 1 couple 1 child policy but at least China has recognised the problem and is tackling it.

So, our enemies are fighting each other. Which one do we support?

Maybe we should just stay out of it?

@ Bewick My mother espoused the same sentiments 40 years ago. Is it humanitarian or is it suicidal to feed people to breed that have absolutely no hope of forward progress.
I am still undicided but, my mother's point of view has certainly proved to lay misery on this earth. Better a human life not be born than be born to starvation and war.

It's time to start having our military use this stuff in their weapons. They don't fear death, but oh, do they fear the loss of their souls. And by their own belief, this will do the job.

Letting people stave so the can't breed is just another means of tyranical population control.

It makes one wonder if it is wise, to give aid, but the opposite is quite dangerous in setting the example it is okay to let people die just because we see no hope for their future.

If we let them die, then we guarantee no hope for their future.

This is one of the issues in which we must be careful not to become like our enemies.

Another approach would be to bomb whoever looks like winning...

Jordan: Islamists Protest Near Syrian Embassy

Protesters held placards that read: Stop the blood shed. From Jordanian children to Syrian Children, Bashar Go and Leave you Butcher.

goethechosemercy: They [the Muslim Brotherhood] were protesting the crackdown on demonstrators in Syria, and referred to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as a “butcher”.

Spoken like the expert butchers that they are.

Pot → Kettle → Black

Lawrence: Maybe we should just stay out of it?

The immortal words of Napoleon spring to mind:

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.

Brutus: Another approach would be to bomb whoever looks like winning...

A thoroughly Machiavellian and eminently commendable strategy. Keep both sides just barely at parity so that they can continue killing each other without much chance of any overwhelming success.

After all, it worked so well with Iraq and Iran.

My only caveat is that we should immediately intervene in any of these rapidly destabilizing countries and bomb out all of their advanced weapons arsenals.

We already allowed al Qaeda operatives to abscond with hundreds of Libyan SAM shoulder launch missiles and we all know they won't be used to shoot down military aircraft.

Let's not repeat that mistake and routinely strip out all major firepower from these toppling regimes so that our foes can revel in the bloody hand-to-hand combat that they boast of enjoying so much.

I'm okay with bombing their advanced weapons capabilities.

We don't really need to kill anyone, we just need to take away their most dangerous toys.

They're doing a great job of killing themselves without our help.

Problem is when one side is pursuing genocide of another group of people. Kinda hard to stay out of those fights. In this case we need to have a very clear understanding of who our real allies are and not just attack blindly those who are winning just because they are winnnig.
