Hey, this business with closing Gitmo is harder than we thought. So here’s what we’ll do: we’ll try the terrorists in American courts and gradually get rid of this pesky promise we made about shutting down the prison in Cuba.
Yeah, that’s it! We’ll haul ‘em to New York and start from there. After all the first ones to go will be the prisoners who are implicated in the 9/11 attacks. Think of the symbolism.
Great idea! Now let’s drop it in the news real quick on a Friday. That makes it harder to the media to question Our Leader and by the time he gets back from his trip it will be old news. They’ll have moved on to some other crisis by then.
Right. We just have to remember to keep generating crises.
Meanwhile, New York’s mayor has decided to put the best face on a decision in which he had no input. Bloomberg said:
- - - - - - - - -
“I support the Obama Administration’s decision to prosecute 9/11 terrorists here in New York. It is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered. We have hosted terrorism trials before, including the trial of Omar Abdel-Rahman, the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
“When I spoke to Attorney General Holder earlier today, I told him New York City stands ready to assist the federal court in the administration of justice in any way necessary. I have great confidence that the NYPD, with federal authorities, will handle security expertly. The NYPD is the best police department in the world and it has experience dealing with high-profile terrorism suspects and any logistical issues that may come up during the trials.”
Yeah. Great idea. It’s not like New York City can’t afford all the expense involved in this supremely stupid move. Will the federal government pick up the tab for the costs attendant on this decision? Or maybe Bloomberg can raise the City’s taxes another notch, driving out the last small businesses.
I’ll bet New Yorkers feel wonderful about this. Just what they need: two terrorists to serve as magnets for Lone Ranger jihadists who’ll flock to the scene to see what they might possibly blow up to prevent the trial from starting or concluding.
Meanwhile, opinion about this move is dividing along predictable lines. The New York Times thinks it’s a real smart move, calling it “A Return to American Justice”:
Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. took a bold and principled step on Friday toward repairing the damage wrought by former President George W. Bush with his decision to discard the nation’s well-established systems of civilian and military justice in the treatment of detainees captured in antiterrorist operations
Lovely sentiments, except that we have no real precedent for “systems of civilian justice” for people who help spread the death, destruction and chaos of Jihadist nihilism in this country. To claim that this has a precedent in American jurisprudence is disingenuous at best.
Sheikyermami has a good summation of the categorical mistakes contained in this very dumb and dangerous idea:
The administration is justifying its decisions on the grounds that because the 9/11 attackers targeted civilians they should be tried as civilians. This makes no sense unless you are a Democrat who believes that the “holy war” that Islamic jihadists have formally declared on us is no different from the acts of isolated individuals who have decided to break the law. This is the approach to the war on terror that John Kerry championed in 2004. Now that Americans have had the poor judgment - the suicidally poor judgment - to make a leftist their president, this is the strategy our nation is set to pursue.
The decision to try the jihadists in a civilian court is also a decision which will divulge America’s security secrets to the enemy since civilian courts afford defendants the right of discovery. It is also a propaganda gift to Islamic murderers who will turn the courtroom into a media circus to promote their hatred against the Great Satan - a hatred shared by their apologists at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the pro-Castro Center for Constitutional Rights who have pioneered the campaign against Guantanamo and whose influence in the Obama Administration is pervasive. (BTW, The newly appointed lawyer for the president is the husband of Obama’s recently departed Maoist communications director Anita Dunn.)
He expounds on the blindness of the Left to differentiate this situation from previous wars here.
We are up the creek without a paddle on this one. Unfortunately, this is not the last of their dangerous ideas. We have three more years of these depredations because these people believe that crises are opportunities so they need to create a lot of them. So far they're succeeding.
I have long since moved past hoping the Democrats could do us some good to praying that we can just survive them.

Rather than divulge America's most vital counter-jihad intelligence, perhaps the prosecuting lawyers should just drop all charges and then dare the judge to release these terrorists.
Personally, I'd love to see Khalid Sheik Mohammed and his co-conspirators cleared of all charges and shoved out the courtroom's front door and into the arms of the waiting crowd of New Yorkers gathered there. Does anyone actually think the police would do anything to intervene?
The very real possibility that Obama's ill-conceived and potentially dangerous decision might invite renewed terrorist attacks against New York should be enough to sink the Democratic party's prospects for decades. If Republicans cannot find a way to milk this like the last cow on the farm, then they will have declared themselves beyond all hope of electability.
Moreover, treating Islmic terrorism as a criminal act is a blunder of such monumental proportions that it represents malfeasance of office. It is difficult in the extreme NOT to view this as an attempt by liberals in the administration to gut the GWoT (Global War on Terrorism) and that is as treasonous as it gets. Also, as noted in many other articles, it is a case of BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) run wild. This craven political maneuvering is more about putting Bush on trial at ANY cost, than it is about prosecuting the terrorists.
I'm going to crosspost my comments from the Newsfeed because I think the potential ramifications of criminal trials for terrorists go much further than just political issues:
The administration's intention of treating Muslim terrorism as a "crimial" offense is symptomatic of its inability to properly address Islam's declaration of war against the west. This is an actionable level of incompetence with respect to neglecting America's most fundamental national security interests. It also continues a pattern of fighting the war against Islam "one-bullet-at-a-time" in a bottom up strategy whose inadequate response will invite WMD terrorist attacks.
This totally inept order of battle has a much greater probability of resulting in a catastrophic nuclear reply than the sort of measured response through persistent disproportionate retaliation that could actually deter such terrorist WMD attacks.
Thus will Islam's grotesque manipulation of liberal Western politicians yield the unexpected dividend of a Muslim holocaust. While Islam remains the root and branch of this looming calamity, it is the West's callow and spineless response to perennial Muslim aggression that seals the ummah's fate.
Oh, what a fascinating modern age we live in. Consider this discrepancy: a person defends his people against a very dangerous aggressor in a war. For that, he gets indicted for war crimes, captured, and put on trial in front of an international tribunal that does its best to thwart his right to a fair defense.
Another individual masterminds a terrorist attack that kills thousands of innocent people, an open act of war. For this, he gets all the rights afforded to much less serious criminals.
The first case I described is that of Radovan Karadzic, the second of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
Seriously, do people not see what is wrong with this picture?

I agree with almost everything, this is a really stupid idea from a bunch that specializes in stupid ideas. But consider this, suppose the purpose is to invite a serious terrorist WMD attack? That then gives The Won and The 0bamanation the grist for the martial law (suspension of habeus corpus, confiscation of weapons, suspension of elections) mill and the last nail in America's coffin that they have been fashioning for 80 years and 10 months. The 0bamanation already controls or plans to control at least 50% of the economy. This just short circuits the last part of HealthScare & Cap'N Trade. Then they can have what they desire, total control in their Fascist utopia.
I know it sounds paranoid but SO FAR all of my paranoid, delusional, wool-gathering prognostications have pretty much been bang on.
Ehm, I take issue with calling 0bama 'American'. Since he doesn't even care to salute the flag, I don't think he is.
OBAMA, BY THIS DECISION, HAS PROVEN HE IS EITHER INSANE.
OR A ONE-MAN SLEEPER CELL.
I prefer to hope it is simply lunacy.
Great Harm Will Come To America From This Demented Decision.
I curse this choice and the lunatic making it.
Profitsbeard, the Obamessiah is not insane, he is the Manchurian candidate. This guy is a plant, he is a born Muzz and he will always be a Muzz, no matter how the wind blows: he doesn't even try to hide it anymore! He made so many statements to where his sympathies lie, you would be blind and deaf to still give him the benefit of the doubt. America has been fooled, it has been duped into a "post American" presidency by an enemy agent, supported by the idiot tools, the rabid 'hate-Bush' brigades from the media and Hollyweird.
The Obamessiah has to go, otherwise we will be gone. Obama wants the Islamization of America, that's no longer a secret. You would have to be willfully blind to overlook that!
