Gates of Vienna News Feed 9/12/2012

Gates of Vienna News Feed 9/12/2012In addition to its other financial woes, Ireland is facing a €324 billion shortfall in its pension plan. That massive amount — two and a half times the Irish national debt — is a result of increases in the country’s pension obligations that have been left unfunded.

In other news, the Taliban destroyed a heavy-transport NATO helicopter parked at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. Three Afghan service members were killed in the attack, and several NATO personnel were wounded.

OT: I just saw a movie about honor killing, Land Gold Women, on YouTube. It was made last year by some Indian filmmakers who were educated in the West. It's a powerful fictionalized account of what happens when a Muslim daughter gets westernized. A movie like this can educate a mass audience in a way blogs and news articles can't, because the characters and situations are seen from the inside. Also, being that the filmmakers are Indian, no one can accuse them of racism.

Are there any photos of the outside of the U.S. consulate in Benghazi?

Supposedly there were upwards 400 armed attackers and there was a firefight between them and the Consulate security. If that is the case the building should be seriously bullet riddled and holes from RPG fire. But I can't find any photos to corroborate these stories.

The photos I saw showed no bullet damage, fire damage and looting yes. But the exterior and interior walls showed no signs of damage from kinetic weapons.

From the looks of it, the U.S. abandoned the consulate and the ambassador and the other American security men were killed fleeing the safe house. One was a ex-SEAL and two were supposedly Marines but no one is saying where they came from.

All told, we aren't getting anything near a honest assessment of what happened.

But what is wrong with the Consular
officials, especially if they were trained servicemen, why didn't they empty every magazine into the mob?
