Gates of Vienna News Feed 2/17/2011

Gates of Vienna News Feed 2/17/2011Tensions are rising on the Italian island of Lampedusa, which has experienced such a large influx of refugees over the last several weeks that more than a quarter of the population is now Tunisian. More than 5,500 refugees have arrived in Italy since the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, the provisional government in Tunisia is calling up army reserves to help contain the continuing civil disturbances.

In other news, China’s rate of inflation continues to increase, with prices up almost 5% in the past year. Food prices are leading the way with about a 10% annual rate of inflation.

The situation here in WI has been heating up. The Senate democrats took off to a resort in Illinois to avoid having to vote while the DNC and others are busing in out of state union protesters.

All in all a shameful display of union thuggery. But it does make for some interesting blog fodder.

It appears that Lampedusa will soon be successfully conquered by the umma.

In hoc signo vinces

“We need to integrate,” she said. “We need to be a single society and Muslims are as much a part of that as anybody else, and (for) extremists of any variety this is not welcome territory and not fertile ground for them.” - Pauline Neville-Jones, Conservative Party.

Along with this the Conservative Party only pays lip service to immigration controls which are in fact counter to their dogma of laissez-faire economics.

Their UK improvised explosive device, engineered by I.D.S. the ideological welfare reforms that will drive the break up of the UK and destroy the British State. The conservatives five year crash and burn plan, will smash and turn the U.K. into warring factions both between and within England, Scotland and Wales.

Over the next few years the political tensions in the U.K. may strike a serious blow to the counter-jihad forcing it off the page of the political agenda.

Thank you for your "boots-on-the-ground" report from the trenches.

Revoking the collective bargaining rights of government employees may prove to be one of the first "shots heard 'round the world" in terms of reclaiming our government from the fiscal lunatics in charge.

The single issue of "salary spiking" (i.e., inflating pre-retirement income through reserved benefits and maximized overtime) to bulk up pension awards, is a keystone that threatens to collapse the entire Ponzi scheme of government employee retirement benefits. It is also a monstrous leech on taxpayer funding of municipal and state services. As a CPA friend of mine says; "This is our Greece".

Curious how Wisconsin is a blue state, traditionally pro-union, and yet they realize that this is the haystack that will break the proverbial camel's back. Any explanation for why this bastion of über-liberals were amongst the first to purchase a clue?

One of the most important news items this year:

"[Islamic cleric] Qaradawi gave a Friday sermon in the square [in Cairo today], where hundreds of thousands of people gathered..."

(Full story)

For more on why this is so momentous, see this article.

Two things that article neglects to mention which are also important to know:

1) Qaradawi is immensely popular throughout the Muslim world, not just in Egypt: he has a popular show on Al Jazeera which apparently millions of Muslims around the world watch.

2) Qaradawi is a prestigious member (and I believe former head) of the most influential and respected and mainstream Islamic university (really a madrassa) in the world -- Al-Azhar University in Cairo.

Interesting; my comment seems to have disappeared in the time I took to walk to the grocery store and back.

Even more interesting: my disappeared comment re-appeared during the time it took for me to take a shower and return.

Hesperado: The links in your News Feed comment probably made the spam filter kick in and divert it into the sink trap.

The Baron is kind enough to apply the plunger every so often and dislodge whatever legitimate items that have managed to get caught up in the debris. Ergo the delay.
