The Gouverneur Times reports with with a hint of disdain on its new Congressional representative, Bill Owens [all emphases mine - D]:
Congressman-elect Bill Owens was sworn in at noon today.
Owens indicated in a press release released shortly afterwards that he was now in favor of the “Affordable Healthcare for America Act” bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during the election campaign.
According to Politico.com, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill. Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.
UPDATED: A spokesman for Congressman Owens indicated correctly that Mr. Owens had recanted his solid position against public option later in the campaign, clarifying that he did not wish public option to be a ‘litmus test’ for the Health Reform bill and that on Oct. 30th, several days prior to the election, in a debate had stated that he generally supported the public option as it was now written (at that time.)
Mr. Owens also indicated during his campaign that he was firmly opposed to cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class in any way as you can see clearly in the screenshot below, taken directly from Mr. Owens’ campaign website.[Here is a link to the screen shot of Mr. Owen’s promises referenced by The Times, above]
But that was then, this is now, and the Honorable Mr. Owens is safely ensconced in Washington.

The House Health reform bill contains sections that cut Medicare benefits, tax existing health care benefits, and increases taxes on the middle class, yet Mr. Owens stated today that he will now vote in favor of those things contrary to what he had promised the voters of NY’s 23rd Congressional District that he would vote against.
Mr. Owens indicated in his press release today that “This legislation will reform the insurance industry and provide increased access to affordable healthcare without taxing healthcare benefits, cutting Medicare benefits or raising taxes on the middle class, and that is exactly the direction we need to go.”
When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens to clarify this information, we received no direct response to our phone or email inquiries. Both FactCheck.org and the Congressional Budget Office agree that HR 3962 contains potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in planned cuts to Medicare, yet Mr. Owens indicates that he supports this legislation and says that it does not cut Medicare benefits.
The Times notes acerbically:
Either Mr. Owens has been snowed or the public is about to be.
As it turns out, the snow job was done on Mr. Owens by President Obama today at a special meeting of the Democrat Caucus. Mr. Owens was singled out by the President for his courage in being willing to vote for this
HR 3962 also includes a range of various taxes on middle-class families as well as language to repeal tax relief already in place. Has Congressman Owens blindly followed Ms. Pelosi’s rhetoric in believing that the end to a tax cut is not the same thing as an increase in taxes or is he hedging his bet with very carefully chosen words?
HR 3962 now also contains language that allows illegal immigrants to be covered under the legislation. When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens for clarification of this language, we received no response other than the press release heretofore mentioned. Specifically, we asked if illegal immigrants would be forced to purchase healthcare insurance as citizens will be and whether or not they would be forced to do so at standard rates or if they would qualify for the public option subsidy.
The Associated Press said this morning that: “House leaders said that, in keeping with the Hispanic Caucus’ demands, there was not likely to be any prohibition added to the House bill against illegal immigrants shopping in the exchange.”
In a speech made to Congress a short time ago, President Obama had stated that the bill would not contain support for illegal immigrants - a statement for which he was called a “liar” by Rep. Joe Wilson. Rep. Wilson was severely chastised for his comment at the time though it would now seem to be true.
The mixed-up mess that was the 23rd Congressional District Special Election was a close race between Democrat Bill Owens and Conservative Doug Hoffman. Many feel that it was unlikely Mr. Owens would have won those crucial few thousand votes if the voting public was aware of his intent with regard to the Health Care bill. The majority of residents in this district do not support the Health Reform bill as it is now written and many feel like they’ve become victims of a fraud perpetrated by their chosen candidate.
Unfortunately, that is true for most of us. As I was writing this post, the Baron came down to tell me that this criminal measure has passed the House. I have no doubt that our district's Congressional traitor is in the “yea” column. Anyone who is dim enough to pass the Cap and Tax would find these new chains even nicer.
The Times ends its report this way:
Breaking campaign promises is not unusual for politicians… it’s a cliché. This is almost certainly a record though. Mr. Owens broke no less than 4 promises in his first 24 hours in office.
Revenge is a dish best eaten cold, my poor cheated New Yorkers. If it’s any comfort, he has to answer for his sins next year, just like anyone else. Obama pulled a fast one on you by taking McHugh out of the running with his appointment to Secretary of the Army. You can get even next year with Obama and his weasley Owens.
The sooner we get these idjits out of office, the sooner we can start to clean up after them. It won’t be pretty - all that wasted money for health coverage like the Native Americans have…and hate so much they're getting their own private care.
Meanwhile, let us hope and pray that the Senate proves to be made of tougher stuff than this motley crew. To paraphrase William Buckley: we'd be better governed if we just took the first 435 names out of the phone book and installed them in office instead of what we have now.

Looks like there's going to be millions of new criminals over night.
They will have to do something about jails, or internment.
Tick Tock, time to go John Galt.
I want to add, the reason it was so easy for Owen to change his mind is he is now a member of Congress and HR3200 does not apply to him or his family. He could afford to lie
to his constituents. Had he lost
his race, his promises would have meant much as he too would have been
under the tax health care bill.
He is now forever 'bulletproof' from
the bill rammed down regular folks throats.

In most cases you'd be right. But Mr. Owens has to stand for election next year, just like everyone else. He won't have had time to build the seniority required to keep those benefits after the voters kick the can down the road.
And in the case of Mr. Owens, that can will get kicked so far it may reach the Catskills.
The NY 23rd has been a Republican District since 1871. After the glitch of 2009, it will return to being a Conservative, if not a Republican district. I think the national GOP is now properly chastened. They know they're the cause of this fiasco.
And now the American public knows that (snicker) Newt Gingrinch thought he was positioning himself as a GOP candidate for the 2012 primaries.
As soon as people recover from ROTFL at this idea, some kind soul will give him a cluebag. It will be hand-embroidered with this message:
"1999 is dead and gone, Newt. When the 20th Century left, it took any chance you had for national office with it"
And then we can all suggest he get an honest job.

Abstract The author discusses the ideas of three important psychoanalytic thinkers about group processes in large social groups: Sigmund Freud, Wilfred Bion, and Erich Fromm. Their ideas are developed and applied to analysis of group processes in totalitarian systems, as they were known to the author in Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. In conclusion, treatment considerations as they apply to patients who grew up in these regimes are developed and illustrated by clinical cases.
This paper is dedicated to Dr. Alexander Wolf, who made his groups growth-promoting, free and holding environments.
The author wants to thank Valerie Angel, M.S.W., Eva Papiasvili, Ph.D., Susan Kavaler, Ph.D., Maria Luisa Bastos, Ph.D., and Nancy Smith for their support, critical commentary, and helpful suggestions.
'Reggie Perrin' test will check older workers for signs of mid-life crisis under EU plan
Every worker over the age of 45 could be forced to undergo 'Reggie Perrin' tests to identify those at risk of a mid-life crisis.
Under an EU plan, firms would be ordered to carry out psychological tests on older staff.
The aim would be to spot troubled employees who are thinking of quitting their jobs because they begin to doubt their own abilities in middle age
Workers aged 45 and above face 'Reggie Perrin' tests (pictured, the character, played by Leonard Rossiter) to see if they are at risk of a mid-life crisis
Other ideas put forward by the EU's economic and social committee, to encourage people to postpone retirement, include forcing over-45s to go on training courses to keep them productive.
If this thing passes, I won't be able to run my business "above the table". I can't handle the mandates right now with three employees.
I am either out of business or relegated to doing side work for cash.
thanks Newt and the elite Rs-
we could have had Hoffman...and I'm in CA-
Hoffman's no vote still would have affected me...for the positive....
Hell--
I'm hoping the Senate will choke. They are more visible, more vulnerable. Don't know how many are up for re-election, though.
Don't forget, the tax penalities will kick in right away but the benefits won't start until 2013.
And meanwhile, you'll have a few years to figure out a work-around. We Americans are very good at that.

persikas--
Bion on groups is top notch. I'm not familiar with the Reggie Perrin information. Could you send a link? I mean a URL, not just a citation that would involve a lot of time doing research. It certainly sounds interesting.
Christian soldier--
You have just pin-pointed why local elections for national office affect us all. The rotten thing about this one is that he was rushed thru the swearing in so he could vote for this mess.
And meanwhile, you'll have a few years to figure out a work-around. We Americans are very good at that.
Yeah, like: "take a flying-leap!" and so forth and so on. Ahem, I'm pretty good at that already, and I'm getting better at it all the time; some would say I've mastered it. Why? Because I don't have to do sh*t. I don't have to hire anyone of any persuasion. Just ask me. I don't give two hoots or three hollers about what "Congress" says.
Again, that is all. Come get me.
