The Iranian government has intervened to try to stop the screening of a film in the Netherlands about the Koran.
The Iranians say that the film, by the Dutch member of parliament Geert Wilders, is offensive.
The Iranian justice minister, Gholam Hussein Elham, wrote to his Dutch counterpart, Ernst Hirsch Ballin, calling for a ban.
Mr Hussein Elham said freedom of speech should not be used as a cover for attacking moral and religious values.
So freedom of speech should never be used to… speak freely?
What should it be used for, then? Christmas decorations? A doorstop?
Geert Wilders is clear about what he’s trying to do with his movie:
- - - - - - - - -
Mr Wilders says his film will show the Muslim holy book is an inspiration for murder.
But the Iranian justice minister says it is an unnecessary attack on what Muslims regard as the holiest of things.
There’s no contradiction here.
What Muslims regard as the holiest of things is also an inspiration for murder. In fact, inspiring murder is one of the primary purposes of the Koran. Murdering infidels is considered an Islamic obligation, in order to hasten the ascendancy of Islam over the entire planet.
But Iran sees the Devil at work:
He said the motivation behind the film was satanic and urged the Dutch government to stop its screening.
Mr Wilders has already been advised that he may have to leave the country for his own safety.
But the government has so far refused to intervene, saying the issue is one of freedom of expression.
We’ll see how long the government sticks to their guns. Their support for their own elected member of Parliament has been tepid at best.
Contrast the official Dutch response with the Danish government’s steadfast, vehement, repeated support for mere cartoonists and newspaper editors.
Perhaps the Danes could mount a mission to the Netherlands to give the Dutch a course in comprehensive spinal reconstruction.

And we enlightened, open-minded, culturally aware and sensitive people are supposed to hate Islam, but not Muslims.
I don't get it.
How can the Iranians say that Wilders film is offensive if it has not been seen yet . Another logical inconsistency by the Mussies .
Ethelred,
Neither do I.
An ideology is functional only insofar as it has followers who strive to keep it alive and propagate it. So, logically speaking, how can one not hate the followers? Am I wrong?
I bet the film features lots of pictures from Iran. The only thing we can offend anyone with is with the offensiveness of Islam.
This shows, yet again, how intolerant and overly sensitive Muslims are about their ideology (I really don't consider it a "religion"). No criticism is allowed at all. When will the West understand how dangerous these people are?
ethel and anon...I agree. This is an attempt by people who are trying to play overly diplomatic and "nice". To pan the disease and not the carrier. Islam is only letters in a book until humans breathe life into it. It is these humans (muslims) that I have equal problem with. When the shooting starts in the world religious war the targets won't be books.

Why is the West constantly playing defence? Where is the declaration of Western values that will not be altered for Iran or Muslims who have immigrated to the West?
Where is the long list of Iran's and Arab states' daily depredations that WE find offensive and exhort them to alter?
Why is the whiny brat and bully still getting a polite hearing? Time to tell it to go stand in the corner and shut up.
Muslims who have immigrated to the West and can't comprehend that the success that attracted them is grounded in free speech and separation of church and state and who keep wanting to kill the golden goose need to return to their unfree backwaters of origin.
One word...deportation. All of them. Outlaw the ideology of Islam. Tear down the mosques. Burn the Korans. That's at least the way to get started.
U.F.O.
Separationism and deportation are extremely humane measures. There is nothing humane in allowing Muslims do to all of us what they are doing to France, UK and each other in some places.
What will be more exhausting than fighting Islam is fighting our own 'enlightened' who bitterly resist the very idea of defense against an enemy that is beyond their conceiving. Also, the economic binds of petro-relations will have to be slashed, and this again requires more resolve from our leaders and representatives than seems possible now. The political shifts will be fascinating to observe.
Iran Wants to Silence Geert Wilders
Ummm ... no. Iran—like every other Muslim theocracy—wants to silence all other points of view that do not involve Islam. This is a consistent Muslim goal and Wilders is just one of many side shows.
Laine gets it:
Why is the West constantly playing defence? Where is the declaration of Western values that will not be altered for Iran or Muslims who have immigrated to the West?
No more accommodation or appeasement. Just a simple flat-out statement of what the West will no longer tolerate about Islam.
We need to go one step farther. Islam must be informed that, as practiced, current shari'a law represents a massive violation of human rights such that economic sanctions and military intervention—with the explicit goal of regime change—awaits all who continue to practice it.
The West has, and deserves, all the moral authority necessary to liberate Muslims from Islam. No cultural imperialism is needed to realize that Islam is the source of untold suffering for HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of people around the world. Female Genital Mutilation, stoning, amputation, beheading, Abject Gender Apartheid, pedophilia, loss of religious freedom, lack of free speech, no right of assembly and numerous other fundamental aspects of shari'a law make its elimination a top priority in order to end Islam's crimes against humanity.
SHARI'A LAW IS A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY.
The sooner this basic fact is regestered into the public's awareness the quicker we can set about ridding our world of this moral cancer.
