Reaping the Wind

El Jefe Maximo has tipped us to the following AP story:

AnemometerIranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned Tuesday that the conflict between Lebanon and Israel could trigger “a hurricane” of broader fighting in the Middle East.

Ahmadinejad’s nation is a major backer of the Hezbollah militant group and a sworn enemy of Israel. In his comments, he referred to a proverb that says: “He who raises the wind will get a hurricane.”

“That proverb fully relates to the Middle East, which is a very volatile region,” he said. “And it will be a strong hurricane which will strike really hard.”

El Jefe adds this comment:

Mad Jad is saying that things are going to happen, or that, if they do, nobody should be surprised, because we all have “hurricanes” coming. In particular, I think Mad Jad’s use of the term “hurricane” - supposedly AP tells us, from a proverb - interesting. I hope Homeland Security is on alert.

Is India feeling some of the premonitory breezes from the coming storm? According to a story in The Times of India (warning to readers — expect numerous popup ads at this site):

US embassy put on terror alert

The next few days are likely to be very tense for the US embassy here. For a top IB official has sent a letter to security agencies with a chilling message the American embassy is expected to be targetted any time between now and July 30 by terrorists owing allegiance to an Iranian terror group.

This intelligence input has already sent security agencies scampering to plug real or imagined weaknesses in the security ring around the mission. Sources revealed on Monday that the input was received early last week and has been circulated among all security agencies in Delhi, including the police and paramilitary forces.

“The US embassy has been on an extremely high state of alert and things will remain the same for the next few days. The input has even identified one of the men likely to participate in the attack and efforts are on to establish his presence,” said a source.

[…]

“The threat is that they would launch an all-out assault in the nature of a ‘fidayeen’ attack. The security review was done in keeping with this possibility,” said the official. According to the input, the Iranians in the group of 20 are associated with a Iran terror group comprising terrorists who earlier backed Saddam Hussein.

The alert has also left many wondering if international terrorist groups are trying to join hands with Kashmir terror groups. The letter specifically mentions that people of Kashmiri descent are expected to help the Iranians and Afghans carry out the attack. [emphasis added]

I saw a story yesterday about some Christian groups who interpret current events in the Middle East as a sign of the imminent arrival of the End Times.

Mad Jad’s haloBut the problem isn’t the Christian chiliasts, it’s the Islamic ones, particularly Iran’s ruling Shi’ite oligarchy. They believe the Millennium is about to arrive, that the Twelfth Imam will soon appear to usher in the End, and that they are his appointed assistants.

And they are about to acquire nuclear weapons, while we dither around with the EU and the UN and the IAEA and Iran’s lapdog, Mohammed El Baradei.

I swear, we’re as nutty as Mad Jad, in our own way.

Just look at the anemometer spin!

How right you are, here is another guy who has a few things to say about that:

Are we too "nice"?

BTW, I like that "Mad Jad", I think I will start using it. I wonder who I should accredit it to?

Not to toot my own horn...or maybe that's exactly what i'm doing...I've been calling Mad Jad "mad jad" since Mad Jad became the so-called President of the so-called "Islamic Republic."

How mad is “Mad Jad”, he knows his current stalling tactic will come to a head before too long making a showdown inevitable. What are the odds that he has a bomb, will have a bomb, or believes that he will have a bomb before that not too distant date? Also keep in mind that this wasn’t the only stalling tactic available to him, just look at what his vitriol filled letter got him, he could have used something that wouldn’t have came to a head and kept this open for later.

That date August 22nd means something to him -- seems determined to make things come to a head by then.

I don't know if you all have covered this already, but August 22 does mean something, and I would think it means something to someone like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

This year, August 22 is the Islamic-calendar date Rajab 28, which happens to be the anniversary of when Saladin conquered Jerusalem (1187) and that city fell under Islamic rule.

Yes, August 22 is also the date Iran said it would reply to demands/incentives that it stop enriching uranium.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/20/iran.nuclear/index.html

Ali Larijani, the head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said:

"In case the path of confrontation is chosen instead of the path of dialogue ... and Iran's definite rights are threatened, then there will be no option for Iran but to reconsider its nuclear policies."

As Ahmadinejad is one who believes in the 12th Imam and that once the conditions are there, that it will happen, what better way (in his mind) to do so than to "make" it happen as Iran "reconsider[s] its nuclear policies" upon Jerusalem as it attempts to welcome the 12th Imam?

Could this be one reason why they might have stoked the fire of this phase of the war in Lebanon and Israel?

Go Israel. God speed.

Hopefully, we are not totally dithering while Iran goes about it business of fulfilling its nuclear fantasies and Israel begins to clean up Palestine in preparation for the main event in Persia.

Clean up in Lebanon must lead to Syria before Iran goes nuclear.

Israel must carry a "lot of water" for the west and the coming days will be very difficult. The least we can do, is keep the rest of the world at bay.

We'll all get more than we bargained for.

Better sooner than later.

The Germans are busy inflating the figures of a buffer force up to 40.000 men to show why it can't happen. The Iranians are spiking up the price of oil so their energy traders can increase the windfall to the Iranian Treasury without actually selling oil.

France has gone on vacation until September; the British Parliament is on vacation until October. Adolf Hitler used to like to make dramatic announcements on Friday afternoons when the policy elites had all repaired to their country homes and would not be around until Monday.

We should expect some dramatic events over the summer as the Mad Little Misfit in Teheran and his Bearded Badboy No2 Nasrullah spout their threats, no doubt Bearded Badboy No1 in Iraq - Al-Sadr will have something constructive to add.

All in all we are in for several months of weirdness unless a lot of infarctions curtail the excesses of Mad Millenniallist Mullahs

This whole ‘End of the World’ thing is getting tiresome.

Don’t these Christians recall:

1 Thessalonians Chapter 5: 5:2. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord shall so come as a thief in the night.

Come on, already! Humans have been warring for the whole of their existence. What is different now?

And finally--what makes Mahmoud Ahmadinejad even THINK the winds will blow in his favor? For all the war ranting--Iran has never played the world game with the Big Boys.

We must remember Iranians are Persians not Arabs and interestingly enough Saladin was a Kurd. Not of this Middle East mentality is cut and dry. Not all the hate and fear is of the Jewish state.

What is different now is the functional ability to destroy civilizations. Warring with a sword and warring with atoms are two different things.

William,

I am not advocating real "End of the World-ism." I am not suggesting that I know the time or the hour when the Lord will come. I do not know that and never speculate when it really might come. What I am doing is pointing out that some religious folk out in Iran believe such things. They don't have to be right. In fact, I think they are wrong.

However, right or wrong, they believe it and might act in a corresponding way: that is, to ensure the conditions are ripe to help usher in the coming of the 12th imam.

Ahmadinejad may be wrong about the coming of the 12th imam, but even if he is that would not change the possible fact of his acting as if he were right. That is what worries me about what he might do or the clerics behind him might convince him to do.

What is different now? I think scottsa answered that.

I have put together some of the key info that explains the whole August 22 (Rajab 28) date and Islamist belief in the return of the 12th Imam during a time of chaos and strife: Welcoming 12th Imam, Iran, and August 22.
